The barRett actually doesn't kick too bad, considering it has a double recoil system. Depending on your unit, infantry officer's have to qualify on the .50. That doesn't mean you have to attend sniper school.
why? Firing a .50 means you're engaging targets at well over a mile...........that means you need some serious training to put rounds on target at that distance. Why would an officer have to qualify with the .50 instead of .308? My only knowledge of sniping comes from my friend who was with seal team 4...........he took sniper training even though he was the SAW gunner in his unit. He went to south america for a year to learn that shit.

Any random joe can qualify on a .50. Small tactical units don't always like carrying them around because of the weight. Most Army snipers carry the M40/A3, M110 SASS, M24 SWS and many others, but mainly 7.62 NATO round (x51mm).
Another problem with the .50 cal is you're only supposed to engage 'equipment'.

there've been sniper stories in the media about how the .50 played a big role in taking baghdad. And they were talkin about hitting "people"..........yeah, sometimes behind walls while smoking a ciggarette, but people nonetheless.
So why are you holding the barett?

because it can literally lop your head off at almost 2 miles. Think about that for a moment. A sniper isn't supposed to take a second shot from the same position anyway............well, under perfect circumstances anyway...........at those distances sound doesn't matter much. As to giving away his position............well................that's the rub of being a sniper no?
Tthe accuracy downrange is the only reason it would be used in that capacity. It definitely wouldn't be used in a situation where the sniper would be in immediate danger. Could you imagine lugging that beast and ammo around?
