hey i just started working out on jan 1st my goal is to be a powerlifter. i was wondering where i could find info on the rules the weight classes stuff like that. and also what are the minimum numbers you need to get into powerlifting. right now my max squat attempt is 275 i managed that atf, 295 dead 5x5 and 185 bench. this is after 2 months and i have yet to hit a plateau. i am using the 5x5 right now. i plan to add sled dragging in april for some cardio along with bike riding. late summer i would like to begin wsb training. i think i will be ready by then for it. i have also gone from 169.5 to 190 since jan 1st with the same bf%. so any info on how to get into powerlifting or just point me in the direction of what i need to know to begin would be helpful. thank you.:)

Here are the totals for Elite:

http://elitefts.com/documents/elite.htm

Remember: there's no such thing as minimum numbers. I did my first comp before I totaled class 4, and just totaled class 4 at my second meet. The comp experience alone is valuable, and I doubt you'll find anyone who will shoot you down, regardless of your totals.

There are a LOT of good articles on elitefts.com, and there's also a WSB sticky on Training that would be good to look at.

i will shoot you down, j/k. serisouly though most powerlifters who are serious are very open and helpful, especially to newcomers, after all thats one of the ways to get our sport to keep growing. keep hanging around the board and learn, there are some people here who can help with just about any question, Except how to get those damn suit slip ons off(i still dont know what the hell your talking about fast twitch, you said pantyhose and my then all i can think of is why do you wear pantyhose under your squat suit, lol). as far as a meet, go to barnes and noble and pick up a copy of powerlifting USA and there is always a schedule of upcoming meets, just find one close to you and go lift. PLUSA always has some good articles from time to time.

Oreo, there are no minimum numbers to enter most local level contests. Usually only national or world level meets have a qualifying total. If you're interested you may want to watch a meet to get an idea first. Then go ahead and enter a local meet. You may not have the biggest total but nobody really cares. I've never seen anyone get laughed at for lifting. At small meets you'll see lifters of all ages and sizes. The last meet I went to about half the lifters were high school guys. Naturally, nobody expected them to outlift us more seasoned lifters. There was even a guy in his 70's that put up a 370 squat.

And as for the pantyhose... somebody on this board has to know what I'm talking about. They are called suit slip ons. It seems like a great idea. They let you put your squat suit on in under 30 seconds. If I could only figure out how to pull them out without my squat suit riding all the way up to my crotch. ...arrgh

Yeah, Hannibal's mentioned this idea before. I dunno...when I first got my briefs and suit, I had a hell of a time getting into them. Once I learned some of the tricks, it's not quite as tough, but I suppose if my equipment were a little tighter, it might be an issue.

Alot of the times your entry forms for the meets will have alot of the rules posted on them. I agree that the first meet you may just want to go watch, I learn more any more from every meet I go to, its amaising how many people will go out of there way to help you out, all you have to do is ask. In all of my expirences I have yet to talk to someone that isn't willing to tell you whats working for them. Alot of the times its really helpful. Just go to one and talk to people. Watch and see how the big guys are doing it, chances are its right!!

It takes me nearly 10 minutes and alot of sweat to get my Genesis Suit on even WITH slippers, and they are a real bitch to pull out from under the legs afterward.
