Imagine if a white judge had said what Sonia Sotomayor said

lol I think referring to her as a racist c**t is a bit of a stretch if it is based solely on this particular statement she made 8 yrs ago. I dont know anything about her though.

So, what do her actions as a judge say about her? Is there any information about that at all in the media?

Why do you think things are this way?

It seems like the whole white/minority relationship in this country can be akin to a relationship between a husband and wife where the husband has "wronged" the wife and the wife will forever hold it over his head and use it against him. If the wife ever cries foul against the husband (justified or not) it is allowed because the husband has "wronged" the wife. the wife will always have ears to listen and sympathize, no matter what the current state of the relationship is, because afterall, the husband "wronged" her once upon a time so she is forever martyred and thinks she deserves special treatment now.

I don't think she is a racict and she may be right but she should have phrased it differently. But the fact of the matter is that if a white man said the same thing the media would be having a field day!

So you think that a hispanic female inherently makes better rulings as a judge than a white male?

So I guess in turn, she isnt as qualified to judge Non-latino/white cases as whitey?

Anyway, ultimately it doesnt see overwhelmingly offensive. Is it worthwhile to even spend time giving a shit?

maybe cause she is getting a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the nation?

i could ramble for days about this...i think a large part of it has to do with middle school education when we learn about race and america's racial history.
the only type of racism mentioned is white racism, we get lumped alltogether in a racist heap...gives the impression that a dark skinned bro cannot be racist.
meh

it def is an extreme thing for me to say...and i really don't think she is racist.
arrogant/smug for sure, but not racist.
i reacted that way because that's how peeps react to white bros when they say something like that.
as a white culture i'd like to see more people getting irate like i did, the last few years we just sit down and take it like a bunch of pussies and i want that to end...sorry for the ramble

She said in 2001: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." The remark was in the context her saying that "our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging."

Obama sure Sotomayor would restate 2001 comment - Yahoo! News

The part of the speech nobody bothers to read...

Let us not forget that wise men like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Justice [Benjamin] Cardozo voted on cases which upheld both sex and race discrimination in our society. Until 1972, no Supreme Court case ever upheld the claim of a woman in a gender discrimination case. I, like Professor Carter, believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group. Many are so capable. As Judge Cedarbaum pointed out to me, nine white men on the Supreme Court in the past have done so on many occasions and on many issues including Brown.

However, to understand takes time and effort, something that not all people are willing to give. For others, their experiences limit their ability to understand the experiences of others. Other simply do not care. Hence, one must accept the proposition that a difference there will be by the presence of women and people of color on the bench. Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see.

The speech was titled "A Latina Judge's Voice". What the fuck would you expect her to say in it?

I'm sure there's not a person on EF, except Razorguns, that's never said anything that wouldn't look bad when taken out of context 8 years later.
