If you don't move your bowels daily, you are not eating enough fiber.

Very briefly, two macronutrients are needed to keep your bowels moving regularly, water and fiber. (I'd call water a nutrient :)) You will need at least 64oz (1.89 liters) of water a day, and depending on a variety of factors such as body weight and activity level, you may well need twice that amount. Twenty-five grams of fiber daily is the often quoted recommendation for fiber intake. Personally, I find this number to be a little low. Thirty-five appears to be a good amount.

The fiber attracts water into the stool, making it larger and softer, two characteristics that make it far easier for the intestines to push it along. If you do not get enough of either water or fiber, the bowels cannot form an easily passable stool and things back up quickly.

If you have to push hard to pass a stool, you are not getting enough water, fiber, or both.

If your stool is dry and hard, you are not getting enough water, fiber, or both.

If you do not move your bowels at least once daily, you are not getting enough water, fiber, or both.

If you have to take laxatives, you are not getting enough water, fiber, or both.

If you are trying to build muscle, and are consuming a relatively larger volume of food daily, I believe that that your need for dietary fiber and water for bowel regularity appears to increase. While on a bulking diet I've noticed my bowel movements become far less frequent if I do not adjust my fiber and water intake. My typical 30 grams a day of fiber isn't enough to keep things moving. I recommend adding at least an extra 5 grams of fiber daily for every 300 extra calories you've added to your regular diet.

Besides - fiber helps decrease your risk for colon cancer and that's a beautiful thing.

I take Benefiber - it has 0 taste. I mix it in my morning coffee, but you can mix it in plain water too. Great stuff! I get it at Sam's Club - cheapest price I've been able to find.

yep. And diverticulitus and hemorrhoids.

Benefiber is ok, and you're right it mixes very well. Plain old psyllium seed husk fiber is better though because it attracts more water and expands more, providing a fuller and softer stool. Plus it's a heck of a lot cheaper.

I use psyllium seed husk fiber also - usually mix it in my protein shakes. I buy this in bulk from the health food store. It is cheap & effective!

I too get psyllium husk from Bulk Barn, its really cheap.

RW, I'm glad you posted about this. I was just thinking the other day, I need more fiber in my diet. I am currently bulking & I've noticed that I'm not so regular ,as I was before bulking. I've been eating much more & I have days where I just can't go & feel uncomfortable. This was a great reminder to increase the fiber. Thankfully, I always remember to drink enough water each day.

I "go" as least frequent as I can... I'm weird....
You know, that's really, really unhealthy, right? I'm sorry if this is TMI and not an elegant topic of conversation but you don't know real joy until you have for intestinal disease (major sarc). I've had bowel problems since my celiac manifested when I was in my early 30s and it fucked my life up totally and completely. It wrecked my skin, trashed my health, my libido, my sleep habits, EVERYTHING. It's taken me over ten years to get close to my baseline, ten years my husband and I can never, never have back.

Why on earth would you purposely retain toxins in your body? Walking around with a full colon is no different than walking around with a full bladder. Your belly bloats, it gives you gas, it can't be comfortable.

If it's a roommate/embarassment issue thing, put a radio in the bathroom and blast it. If it's a physically uncomfortable thing, up your fiber and increase your water. If it's still uncomfortable, see a GI doc, but for heaven's sake, girl, you're smart, don't do this to yourself. You want to end up with bleeding hemorrhoids in your 40s or 50s, or worse, colon cancer? You will cause yourself damage or disease, seriously. You're young, you can get away with it now, but it will catch up to you.

You're right... I'll look into that fiber you can dilute in water
Well, this may not make sense, but I don't want hear I'm right. It was a long post about intestines and poo but I wrote it less to make a point but more because, even though I don't "know" you, I have concern for your health and well being.

And supplemental fiber is just that, only about 5 grams of insoluble fiber. Not the best solution, and not roughage. A high fiber cereal, fruit and salads and fresh veggies are much more pleasant, really. I'd rather eat a bowl of brown rice, broccoli and greens than suck down a couple of glasses of Benifiber any day of the week :chomp:

Not a good one at all. Needing to use a fiber supplement is a sign that you need to re-evaluate your diet.

One (9oz drained) can of organic black beans provides me nearly 20 grams of fiber, in addition to an excellent source of low GI carbs. Far better way to get one's fiber.

Oh another issue can be to much fiber and not enough good fats. I found that one out when contest dieting and I would rotate fat intakes on the low fat intake day it would hurt to go and was hard.

Contest dieting sounds like could have been not enough water in your GI tract to hydrate your stools. Perhaps too much was being excreted by you kidneys. But yes you make a good point about the fats. Even excessive amounts of good fats can cause constipation.

Contest time I drink a stupid amount of water like 2 gallons on average. However the no bowl movement does happen sometimes on peak weak when I am drying out which can be a problem.

That's why I figured it could've been not enough water in your GI tract. When you drink that much it tends to mostly get excreted by the kidneys. Can't remember why though. :nerd:

Oh, I diod not know those supplements are not enough, I do eat fruit and veggies, I guess I can just up my yam and mango intake ^_^

Cayenne pepper has help ed me out, but I consume WAYYYYYY more than a normal human being would. I take it for medicinal purposes and this is one herb that taking the capsules is not a good idea, you have to have it in hot beverage or food.

On the plus side, 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper in your chicken and rice makes you drink a helluva lot of water :redhot:

I love spicy hot food, the spicier the better-think i have an iron stomach because I never get ring sting or anything bad at all from it. My unscientific theory is that it is cleansing from the inside out. I feel so much more alive when i eat it too.
Vietnamese chili sauce in pho is the best!
I had some issues with marble sized poohs, but MM you set me right with advice about lots more water, it made a big difference, and I did add psyllium to help things along too.

LMAO at marble size poos. I can see where this thread is going. I wouldn't be suprised if it turns into a 9 page deal here, lol.

Well, it comes out the other end one way or the other, you really do have to take it on a steady basis to get your body used to it.

Put it this way, I consume anywhere from a full tsp. to nearly a full tablespoon of cayenne pepper over the course of a day, every day (I usually have about 1/2 tsp. in a hot soup, beverage or most meals, at the very least, first thing in the morning in my coffee). My tolerance is pretty good and if I take one of those capsules it blows my pipes out.

Herbalists don't advocate the capsules, anyway. They think it's too shocking to the system and sort of defeats the purpose. The ideal case is drinking it as a "tea" (just cayenne and hot water) or in a hot lemonade drink.

I know it is a great natural fatburner an other reasons to take it?

It's about the only thing I can think of doing for cardiovascular health :whatever:

There is a very, very strong history of fatal cardiovascular disease in my father's family. Of all of his siblings he lived the longest, making it to a grand total of 61 (his heart failed from his emphysema) but he had his first heart attack in his 40s.

My half brother had three cerebrovascular procedures before he hit 60, and he's actually in the pacemaker industry.

So going down via something cardiovascular related is virtually my genetic destiny unless I try taking some preventative steps :whatever: The medical community can't do shit for me, I go to a doctor with one problem, I come away as sick as ever and with two other new problems on top of that one (having weird, unpredictable, reactions to chemicals and medications does not help things one bit).

Here, check this out: Health Benefits of Cayenne Pepper

Bump.

from a couple of months back I do go everyday and once in a while in morning or night, my husband goes every morning I have no idea how he got his body used to it, I can only go when my body actually makes a bowl movement I cant just go "hmmmm it's morning Im gonna poop!" doesnt work like that for me.... cherries are very expensive here (6 individual cherries are about $2 :worried:) Im thinking of going the granny way and eating prunes...

I mixed half a teaspoon with 4 oz of warm water downed it in 4 shots. It actually feels really good going down instantly gave my body a warm flush bet it would be really good when you are sick. I am going to try to start taking it everyday.
