Totally. You do not need them if you are not training. Yes, they are by far the most efficient fuel, but you can get by on others. I am posting this assuming you do not do hard physical labor 10 -12 hours a day. As to how far out to drop them, you should experiment a little. I can drop carbs three days out and shed a lot of water, but I am used to doing it. The first time you do this, you may have some difficulty with cravings and/or headaches.
I have also used a TKD and CKD to drop weight, and have found that the TKD is easier to maintain, but I get better results with the CKD. I am a complete schizoid during the second day of the depletion phase when CKD'ing.
My wife cuts for a meet by just dropping her total calories with the reduction be split evenly between carbs and fat, but then she cannot drop water to save her life, even in a sauna.
