I have an opportunity to compete in a PL contest.

Well, I was at the gym yesterday and this guy asked me if I was a PL. I said no, but thank you (because I definitely consider that a compliment).

Anyway, he told me about a PL contest that is going to be in my town on Sept 14th, I think. It got me thinking. I have never powerlifted before, but I was thinking that because of my strongwoman background (for what little bit I was involved in) I probably wouldn't do horrible.

I think I have 5 weeks or something. What do you all think? Should I go for it just to see what I can do? I would compete raw, of course, because I have no gear (except for a belt and some PL shoes). I'm actually seriously considering this.

Think it would be a bad idea???

Hey girl! I can't speak for the difference in training between PL & SW, but you should at least get some info on the competition - what level is it? What are the events & what are some of the current records? How do you stack up against them?

I guess generally your need to be able to do regulation (specific form) squats, deads and benchpresses. Wrong/bad form gets you DQ'd. Based on where you stand relative to the min requirements to seriously compete, you should consider it. Nothing gives you a reality check & breadth of experience better than actually doing it.

And now I defer to those who know the scoop on PL....

NF, you know from Jill that PL is the strength base for many sports, including strongperson. Of course you can do this! The only restraint I see here is if you want to use lifting gear and don't have time to order it and work with it. Other than that, you're a shoe in.

If you're able to give it a shot, ABSOLUTELY GO FOR IT! You know how much you enjoy the sport! If you need a cheerleader, I'll be there for ya, girl. :)

Yes...and I talked to her about it tonight and she said I should definitely go for it. She said that she would be glad to help me out in any way she can, and for that I'm eternally grateful!

She suggested that I need to do this one gear free so I can see where my starting point is. That makes total sense to me.

Thanks for your input!

Mrs.P...you know I would always LOVE to have you be my cheerleader!

Sassy...thanks so much! I'm not sure about the level of the competition or anything like that. The only thing I know right now is that if I wanted to do it...I have 5 weeks worth of training ahead of me! LOL. I should find out more info tomorrow. The guy who told me about the contest wants me to lift with him so he can help me out. I think he will be a huge help. He's putting up some great numbers himself, so I know that I won't be learning from an amateur.

Thanks for your input, everyone!

Oh! I just checked out Rebecca's site...and it was great! A ton of good information and also a beginner's training regimen.

I'm already feeling pumped about it! LOL

I definately think you should lift. It'll be some great experience and alot of fun!

Thanks for checking out my site. If you have any questions, email me or PM me. I'd be happy to help. :D

Ya got nothing to lose...
