Hypo/Hyperthyroid - Upfront and needing advice

I'm utterly, unendurably confused. I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and my last blood test for my complete metabolic panel came in.

Now, I've gained an enormous amount of weight in a short time with the PCOS blossoming, I'm on a low estro/normal-high progest. birth control pill I cannot stop taking because my period has disappeared and only occurs with the pill.

These are the symptoms I've experienced all throughout life and MANY getting worse now:

nervousness

mental impairment, memory lapses, diminished attention span

irritability

trembling hands

fatigue

insomnia

diarrhea

itchy skin

heart palpitations

heat intolerance

increased sweating (I have hyperhydrosis!!!)

muscle weakness

increase in bowel movements (I get EXTREMELY gassy for no apparent reason and this is very embarassing)

decrease in menstrual periods (Mine stopped in all, hence PCOS and hiritiusm (sp?) the adrenal, hair thing)

eye irritation
------------------------------------------------------

Okay, now, I can't understand THIS: Glucose: (In range) 78 mg/dL

Glucose normal range 65 - 139 [check]

TSH 0.74 (The range is from 0.70 to 6.40, meaning I'm HYPERTHYROID?!?!?!)

HEEEEEEEEEEEEELP! I'm so confused! How am I going to get this weight off?! Tell me what I should suggest to my doctor, and how I should argue his statement, because I don't want him putting me on something that'll totally hinder me! I've gained like 5lbs in the past week minus the water :worried:

The sugar cravings are HORRENDOUS! GIRLS HELP!

Do you have any literature - books - on PCOS? I know there are several books at amazon.com that deal with PCOS, and how to manage it using natural methods .... nutrition, etc.

I would look into that, as well as other natural methods (since you want to avoid more and more medicine) such as acupuncture.

Go see a good naturopath. It sounds like a hormone imbalance to me but I am no Dr. Just going to be going to school for it. I had a lot of problems and went to see one. I found out I was hypothyroid and my body produced to much testosterone. Weird!
Good luck sweetheart!

Well I just have been going through some of what you just described. I haven't been diagnosed with that.. but that's what they think I have. I can relate to the sugar cravings because I never had them like this before. What I did was took a week off from the gym.. took 3 days and did a detox diet. I feel 100% better now. I haven't touched any candy since last week now. Nor am I craving it. They all thought I had hyperthyroidism but mine came back normal.
I just did a search here is a good link for you:

http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/tsh/test.html

It says:"A high TSH result often means an underactive thyroid gland that is not responding adequately to the stimulation of TSH due to some type of acute or chronic thyroid dysfunction."

What pill do they have you on? I discovered they had me on Yasmin which contains an added water pill which is not a diuretic type. So they are switching me to Ortho-Trycyclin. You may want to research the pill you are on also. I haven't found any but this Ortho-Trycyclin that works. I may even be spelling the end of that wrong.
Stressing over this is only going to make you gain more weight because your cortisol levels are going to be out of whack on top of it. Mine is also thought to be an increase in testosterone levels like you which is not common. It's good for adding muscle mass like I am finding out at the gym. I've also identified though that the diet has to be super clean, and cardio at least 4 days a week is a necessity.
I hope any of that helps you...

Well, I'm going to see the Endo tomorrow. They have me on Ortho-tri too! :) they had me on Yasmin and it was NOT working out. Smart us, huh?

Well - they are saying that my highly elevated cortisol might just be causing all of this. I will find out tomorrow. Thanks everyone.
