How often should I...

Hey everyboy,
I've been training for aout 5 years and have really been neglecting to do much back or legs until the last year.
Anyways, i did deadlifts for the first time yesterday.. I know.. wierd.. I've always avoided them until yesterday when I thought I'd give em a shot. I had one of the trainer guys at the gym make sure I was doing correct form and Man... today I "Hurt so good" My hams feel like somebody used them for a punching bag and my lower bag feels really tight, and slightly sore. Here's my question. How often should I do this excercise. It kinda feels like it took a lot out of me, but its hard to tell, because its still pretty ealy in the morning(naturally tired). Should I be doing dead lifts once a week? Once every 2 weeks? More, less? I'm 5'10 180lbs roughly 10-11% BF. I weight train generally 5-6 days a week and do cardio 5-6 days a week also.
Thanks
Ryan

it depends. you could try doing stiff-legged deadlifts for hams one week with legs and the following doing regular deadlifts for back, and alternate as such. my brother however, does both types in one week. it depends when you train the two. either way, make sure you do at least one of them at week. they are an invaluble asset to any training program. just my opinion.

deads and squats will do fine just once a week, as with almost every other exercise. remember to do them first in the workout too, as they are the most compound.

When I pull heavy...I can sometimes go ever 7 days and on others it can take 2 weeks.

If you are built for it, you can deadlift fairly often, maybe even once per week. If you are not, and I am one who is not, then deadlifting every week will make you go backward. Deadlifts for those not built for it, take more than they give back.

You could do good mornings, though, and build up the deadlift without having to pull all the time.

From a strength athlete's perspective...you could also do partial deadlifts, Dimel Deadlifts, or speed deadlifts.

You can do a variation every week.

depends on recovery time and degree of intensity. if you are cycling between light and heavy, you should be able to go pretty often. i know when i hit em heavy, 5 days im feeling it. but if i were to go down to my 8-10 range its only about 3 days and i can hit up a new variation.

i'll usually do only one type though for my purposes. either from the floor pulls or a romanian variation. alternating each week or so. sometimes throwing dbells in for fun.

Well for me after I added 2 sets of deadlifts to my routine, just once a week, it pushed me into overtraining.

But I put it in after my squats, not very smart. So either I take it out or do it on a day by itself. I probably don't need to dead at all, reverse hypers and keystone stiff deads do the job.

I'm not too sure how I'd judge weather or not I'm built for dead lifts.... but I think I'm going to try doing it once a week. 3 sets of 6 singles with 1/2 second in between each rep.
I'm pretty sure I'm already over training slightly right now in an attempt to lean down, but will definitely reduce my excercise slightly once I've ripped down a few more lbs.
Thanks

I'm new at lifting. I do deadlifts every other week - on back/biceps day. This week I start a suggestion I got here to alternate them with good mornings. I squat and do SLDLs every week.
