How much is really absorbed from a shake...

Q1: I primarily use Elite Dymatize Whey and some occasional Muscle Milk, but how much of what you drink is really absorbed?

I could drink shakes all day long but I'm assuming I need some other forms of protein.

I love putting 5 egg whites in my shakes too but my wife freaks out because I'm "bound" to get salmonella.

Q2: Is there anything I can do to the egg to kill the salmonella chances? I heard boiling it for 1 min but I don't thing that would do anything.

I'm trying to learn by reading what everyone else posts but there is some must theory when it comes to nutrition.

I know what things are good to eat but I'm having a hard time putting it into a plan that has all that I need amount wise.

I could use a mentor anyone want to throw me a bone?

btw. 30 year old male. Worked out pretty much since I was 5. 5' 11" 225 lbs. 17-20 % BF?

Maybe I should rephrase my question. Is there a point where shakes alone cannot function as your source of protein. How many grams a day is a max you should get from shakes?

I don't think there is a max. But it's a good idea to get solid forms of protein. They require more energy for digestion and release slower into the body to allow a more constant supply of protein into the body. Since they also require more energy for digestion they actually help to speed of your metabolism to a small degree.
I'm no expert but I take about 3 shakes a day that total about 100 to 120g of protein a day. This is done between meals with solid protein.
Hope my 2 cents gave you some input.

Q1: Roughly up to 50-55gs of protein can be digested at once. I don't think there is anything wrong with drinking shakes all day long, the problem more so is not eating anything else all day long. Whey protein is from whey. You need a variety of proteins, from all kinds of sources, and the additional nutrient profiles that come along with those sources.

If anyone JUST ate tuna or chicken, they probably wouldn't be doing the best thing by their body either. At least though it would be real whole food and not laced with articificial sweeterner, etc.

Q2: There have been a lot of threads about eggs recently on this board, browse a a couple pages back and I'm sure you'll find a lot of reading. The outcome of the latest thread was split, but it was basically that raw eggs actually most likely pose no real threat, but that if you were concerned, you could always purchase pasteurized egg whites in a container at the supermarket, which would DEFINITELY be safe.

Also contained in one of those egg threads is a link to a web site that sells a super affordable 100% egg white protein powder, something like 12gs of real egg protein per tablesoon.

thanks guys. for breakfast I love doing 2 scoops of whey, 5 egg whites and a 1/2 c. of oats.

that lands me about 81 grams of protein. you think that's too much protein for one meal? (I can drink it in about 8 seconds :)

I'm slowly getting my diet plan worked out. maybe someday I'll get a 6-Pack ;)

I can't remember exactly what the mechanism is but if one consumes raw eggs there is an enzyme that can inhibit the body's ability to utilize one if not several of the B vitamins. When eggs are cooked this enzyme is destroyed and then there is no problem. So I don't recommend eating raw eggs.

Just a quick question.... are you accounting for the fact that egg whites only have about of the third or less of the protein of a whole egg when you get the number 81? Just seems a little high. Totally depends on your brand of whey and size of egg though so don't mind me.

In general two scoops of whey and the oats, with two cups of skim milk, is a perfect shake.

Also, while u may not be absorbing all the protein in a specific meal, you might need the calories if you're trying to bulk, so its not *always* bad. Just a thought.

10% of shakes and 30-40% of protein in foods is utilized - Nutrition book
Does the book have any citations to studies? The best I've ever gotten from professors was, "it varies."
