How much can you bench? & How much do you weigh?

Every year on my last workout before I leave for Panama for Spring Break I set a personal record. There is just something about Club La Villa that makes me more of a man than I really am. Maybe it is just the really easy girls there (or all the juice running thru my blood). This year I am recouping from a bad wrist injury and I'm married so there will be none of that but I still plan on setting a new PR. You can leave your PR's in Dumbell press or Flat bench. I'm just curious. These are mine:

2 years ago I weighed 130lbs and benched 265lb. (raw)

Last year I weighed 150lbs and pressed the 110's 3 times on Flat DB press and 100's 3 times on incline DB press.

My wrist injury set me way back for next year but I plan on a killer come back.

Hm....I haven't tested in a while. I bench in the 190 range, raw, and 243 shirted. I did 297 to a 2 board a few weeks ago, so I will shoot for that this Wednesday. These are all gym lifts, of course. No comps yet.

I weigh 180.

By the way, even if you are a beginner and not a powerlifter I am still curious so let us know. Everyone has to start somewhere.

It's two 2x4s bound together. It comes to about 3 inches off the chest, after it gets smooshed down. LOL

I did that basically to stretch the shirt. If I can GET 297 to my chest in the shirt, I'm confident I can press it. I have to work the bottom of my bench though. My floor press is only 177, and my lockout is 403.

never tried a 1RM, but i bench about 170 for reps. but i know i can get a least 200 up for one rep. at least, that's how it feels. shame i train alone, otherwise i could try it. i'm not a powerlifter by the way (i would be ashamed of myself if i was lol, no disrespect to anyone else intended). oh yeah, i weight about 180 at 6'2"

Well, I havn't done barbell bench press for max weight in a couple of years since I have massive scar tissue on my bicep tendon and doing bench press with a BB really agrevates it...
But I can still do dumbells with minimal pain. I don't usually ever do a 1 rep max anymore(don't see much point), but I'll post what I can lift for reps when I'm feeling strong) I'm 200 lbs roughly right now @ 5'10 natural and havn't tryed maxing out for a while.. but at a lean 178 (about 2-3months ago) I could flat dumbell press the 100's for 7 reps, with a full stretch at the bottom. I have to assume that I wouldn't have much problem with the 100's now, however I usually only use 90's-95's if i don't have a spot(bicep tendon kills on the first rep)
The last time I did a big BB bench was a little over 2 years ago.. I think I did around 6 reps with 225..

well...it depends on what I am training for.

I have:

Benched 2x bodyweight raw...
....hit 12 reps with bodyweight plus 100 pounds

7 months ago(pre-rotator injury) :

---weighed 245, benched 405

present(post rotator):

----weigh 260, bench 135 for a few before I start to cry

Never used a shirt, after my rotator heals I'd like to try one

yesterday i got 304 in a competition. i'm young though, that number will shoot up at a ridiculous speed

Thanks spatts, slowly. I couldn't brush my teeth with my right hand for a little while, so things are looking up for the shoulder.:)

Then after my knee and back sugeries, I'll be good to go again!

YES, congrats again to Jeremy...304 competition bench at 15 years old. If he stays healthy, he's going to be a legend!

22 years old

Best weights/Bodyweight

330lb bench(raw)@ 165 bodyweight
350lb bench(in bench shirt in a competition)@165 bodyweight
365lb bench(in bench shirt, gym lift not competition)@165 bw

As far as gym lifts I have done on bench here are some PR's for me. These were all done at a 185-190lb bodyweight.

225x23
250x17
275x12
300x7
315x4

Max Bench was 365 Raw, Never powerlifted. I did that at about 215 bodyweight.

After my diet hopefully I'll be up near 2x bodyweight. I want to hit 2x bodyweight before my 20th Bday.

Currently @ 187lbs I can flat bench 315 twice, just did it last week wasn't too bad, my spotter didn't need to touch the bar so I guess I might be able to squeeze another rep out next week...

good luck with the rotator, thai.

and cobin, good luck with your goal, if its only 10 pounds more, you'll have it really soon

thanks again spatts.

you all have great lifts

one thing though, some feds dont allow you to have any kind of head raising, like the cookey ones i lift in. just be sure you know the rules before every comp. i've seen a couple guys get red-lighted for some very good lifts

havent done a max ina long time but benched 320lbs for 3 sets of 5 reps today, guessing it's probably around 400lbs (I weight 225lbs)

Well I am no comparison to you guys, but keeping in mind I started working out seriously 5 weeks ago I'm doing ok. Haven't tried my max bench for a week though, been refining my routine, down to training only 2 muscle groups per workout session.

Week 1
Weight: 130
Max Bench: 135

Week 4
Weight: 136
Max Bench: 155

Nowhere near you guys but I'm very pleased with my progress.

All the best benchers raise their heads off the bench each rep...Start doing it regularly if you arent used to it.

....but this was a floor press which qould be midrange on a regular rom bench

i think it might be a superstition thing, it shouldnt have anything to do with the form itself, should it? if i lift my head up, i will lose sight of my shoulder blades staying back. but thats just me. im a freak.

i think when you raise your head, you can see where the bar touches, so it's basically easier to stay in your groove

To all the powerlifting competitors, what is a good ratio for maxbench to bodyweight to place in comps? If I could break 300lb with no shirt and weigh 165lb is that enough to place? I am shooting for 165lb bodyweight in the next few months. So I will have to gain 25lbs. Hope I can 2x my bodyweight again but it is doubtful.

The head raise is important with denim bench shirts too. Getting the bar down to the chest is much more effective with a head raise.

I know at the major meets allow head raising. The last 2 meets I did they allowed it.

The floor press can be done with a head raise too. It is more of a bottom movement for a lot of people (some people the bar almost hits the chest). In the westside videos they do head raises in the floor press. I dont think head raising matters much in the floor press though.

Yes 300 at 165 lbs is outstanding.

You will do very well at powerlifting competitons with that bench.

When you gain weight those weight to lift ratios change but you are much better off gaining weight and strength. That x bodyweight formula favors smaller guys so dont sweat it. I rather be 250 pounds and bench 500 than be 200 and bench 405 (which the 400 bench scores higher in the wacky formula)

when people do floor presses, is there any shoulder blade tucking or the like? or is it just to work the mid-range to lockout so it's not neccesary?

Ok...not that I would say I was a great bencher, or even a good bencher for that matter...but the head raise is track the bar. As Cyto mentioned in a later post with double denim it makes it easier to get the bar down with a head raise.

So for me its a form issue. You "play the way you practice" so to speak. So on all my bench movements I use all the techniques, such as a head raise, that I will use in competition.

jeremys...yes I think you should pull your shoulder blades together, tuck your elbows.....do everything you would for a normal bench. Its just that there is no leg drive, and the rom of motion is somewhat reduced.

hey stupid! just kidding..

a bench shirt is a tight fitting-garment made of polyester or denim, and some other materials. it gives a lifter more support through the lift, making it safer. they may also add a few pounds

some are bitches to get on though

I may be stupid but the shirt I had (and only put on once) was so tight it pulled my shoulders forward and I couldn't pull them back myself. I never benched with the shirt but it seems that it would help when the bar reaches your chest because there is so much tension in the fabric that the accual shirt is helping with your "explosion" (to press the bar up) after the pause. I may be wrong but Spatts might be able to clear this up.

Yeah, it helps the most at the bottom. Personally, I like it because I have rotator cuff issues, and it keeps my shoulders tight. You HAVE to be able to get your shoulders back, arms down, etc...just like you would without a shirt, though.

I am 185 LBS and my max bench was 275lbs 2 reps on my own last 4 assisted I was gettin six I don't care how much help was needed..

wiseachoo,
Congratulations on starting working out...
Looks like you are already gaining some weight, both in mass and on your bench.
Stick with it and you'll be benching 200 in no time...
Thankss
ryan

my best was 275 while weighing 160. that was this past spring semester. i haven't benched heavy in a while, so i most likely can't put that up now. i'll start some heavy lifting very soon though. i hope to break 300 sometime.

395 at 220 bw. Trying to diet down to 200 to put up 4 plates, feeling week lately though.

Nope, can't say I can bench twice my bodyweight yet, but I did do 225 for 21. I thought that was pretty cool, got jacked up from reading the NFL combines. Some of those guys speed to strength ratio is phenomenal.

DrBones

Thanks :) I changed my routine so I only workout 3 times a week, 2 muscle groups per day. I just had my chest/tri day today, I maxed at 165 (still weigh about 137). Looks like it hopped another 10 lbs. w00. I'm starting my very first creatine loading phase tomorrow night when it comes in, should help even more :)

You guys are too buff, when I eventually break 200 I'll be so happy :P
