How do you figure out how much to spend on an engagement/wedding ring? Girls and guys feel free to chime in please.

My girl and I have been kicking around the idea of marriege at some point. I am curious as to find out exactly how much to spend on one. Is it equivalent to your salary? Say if you made 100k a year...what kind of money should be spent on the ring?

IMO it's not worth all the money. It's a one time thing. I agree with the house down payment comment. Buy something that will get you somehwere. You're already getting married.

Look at your budget and figure out what you can comfortably spend on one. Then go look at some reputable jewelers to see what you can get in that price range. Don't put it on a credit card and don't let the salesperson talk you into a ring you can't really afford.

wtf... 7k on something you sport on a damn finger? I guess i am an exception to the rule but I would never want something of that value on my finger. A simple band would suit me just fine. I am not high maintence at all... Hell I don't even care where said band or ring comes from... its the thought that counts.
