hey all, my breakfast errrr day consists of about 1 1/2 cups - 2 cups northern gold cereal. its a granola cereal with almonds, puffed rice, oats and dried fruit like blueberries and raspberries, very tasty. anywhoo the stuff is like 3 bux a box on sale and im on a college budget, I want to try and find a recipie as well as a substitute for the sugar, perhaps splenda? what are the best sweeteners out there that dont have that nasty after taste? im using fat free milk in my cereal. Also with breakfast i take 4 egg whites and a 44g protein shake. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I like almonds, dont know anything about puffing rice or anything to make a nice light cereal but im set on spending this summer perfecting a recipie for such a breakfast. I will be mass producing it this summer once I perfect my recipie so that I can eat cheep all year round. Tuna season is coming soon too! cant wait, this is prime time of the year for all you guys to be stocking up on all those great foods you usually cant afford just any time you feel like it. thanks all in advance for your input, suggestions/prior experience.

You can buy puffed-whatever in the cereal aisle of the grocery store......I used to have a dehydrator & found it to be a PITA to dehydrate blueberries - you may have better luck, they went moldy on me before they finished drying....

was your dehydrator a heated one? I would think the one I have would have no prob dehydrating blueberries in a day to 2 days tops.

would like to add some info to this thread and perhaps ask for some assistance. Ive been reaserching puffing my own grain to create the ideal, and afforable diet cereal while being as nutritional as possible. so far ive discovered the following grains can be puffed:
• amaranth
• maize - see popcorn
• rice
• wheat
• millet
• barley

Ive also discovered that this process which puffs the grain is called gun puffing. I cant seem to find any home units that allow one to do this process at home but am dedicated still in doing so. I want to use who intact grains which hold all of the nutritional value we as americans are usually striped of in our every day diets. My undertaking will lead me to much reaserch, and I would like very much to find someone would like to persue this with me. Also does anyone know where you can buy bags of puffed whole grains from health food stores? thanks!
