Ok my cardio sessions usually consist of a 45 min moderate speed jog/run 4x week. A few weeks ago I decided to try out some HIIT. At first it was fun, but now I'm left with sore knees-not so fun. I am not a beginner runner. I’ve been running for a few years now. I’ve even been through the grueling process of training for a marathon, but I've never had any problems with sore joints EVER, until recently. I do not recommend HIIT more than once a week. It’s extremely hard on the joints, and it can also weaken your immune system. If you are new to running, then I suggest you cut it out completely. Also, I have noticed better results with a longer-low intensity jog. Just my two cents. If you are having success with HIIT, all the power to you.
 
Can you give me a good link to a thread or site that explains the nuts and bolts of HIIT? All I can find is threads where everyone posting already knows what it is, and a website selling something that is supposedly super wonderful and incredible, but has too much sales pitch for me to understand the what and how.

I obtained my info from a mix of personal testimonies and online articles. The general consensus is that it is the best thing since whey shakes. If you research it you will find arguments for and against it. The best thing to do is try it out for your self. Just make sure you stock up on some A535 first.
 
lol, i'm just about the opposite, i can handle the intensity in short bursts, but sustained running turns out shinsplints and everything else. I've found some great stretching routines if you're interested, they've really helped to minimize the agony. Also, a GOOD pair of RUNNING shoes is and absolute neccessity, you need to support your body as much as possible during the HIIT.

what does your HIIT session consist of?

and any intense exercise will suppress your immune system for a short period of time.
 
HIIT is a fancy name for INTERVAL TRAINING, periods of high, low and moderate (optional) intensity during a session. Typically ---1 min high --- 2-3 minuts low---- with warm up and cool down low at the beginning and end. some add a moderate period (can be at beg, mid or end)

I find running the most effective form of it but it kills my ankles and my calves are sore for a week.... ive tried it on a stationary bike and it doesnt compare..
 
I am in the middle of recovering from a mild injury to my left knee... I basically played dumb and overdid the cardio thing: 45 min run in the morning AND HIIT in the evenings... I tried this for 5 days straight and at the end of the fifth day couldn't go down stairs or walk without the feeling of something about to give...

I don't regret it though, I know now another thing that does not work for me... so when somebody comes and tells: "HIIT is da Schizzle", I can confidently answer: might be for you, but it is not for me...

If you have joint issue or you are HEAVY, avoid running altogether and stick to low-impact cardio.

Sadly, nothing gets my HR up easier than running.
 
save you intensity for leg days

cardio is cardio leave it at that

and the science proves that longer periods are best for our goals
