Help with my 16 yr old son

Hi all,
Brand new in this forum... looking for advice from others who have been there...
My 16 yr old son (he will be 17 in November) is now bench pressing over 400 lbs.
He's pretty consistent at pressing 390 lbs 3 times or more and is continuing up the scale.
His single-arm curl is between 95-100 lbs right now.
He's also started playing football this year (first year - Fellowship of Christian Athletes team).
He's clean, no steroids or otherwise...
My problem, he's begging me to get into some weightlifting competitions, but I haven't a clue... I've been doing some checking locally for trainers and such, but hoped I could get some advice from others who have been there...
Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

at that age the muscle is not the issue, the tendons and ligaments are the issue possible damage that is...

He'd be better off directed to compound exercises and events vs pure strength competitions, main fear is if he does injury a ligament he will not train that body part for 3-6 months,... how would that make him feel??

every high school I know of has a weightlifting team. get him to go do that.. I am a judge for high school weightlifting and its 100X better than football in every aspect. healthier for him too.. no long practices everyday after school, no late friday nights, no pressure and getting yelled at like you are in the freakin marines or something.

if you want to talk about a sport that will fuck you up long term then football is definately it. wish i had never played it, still have permanent damage to my right arm to this day...

weightlifting I have yet to see any high school kid ever get injured, but they get injured all the time in football.

If he likes football look into Olympic lifting. Learning the explosive lifts will help him in sports. Most cities will had a few good coaches that train for competitions.

What state do you live in? You can go to powerliftingwatch.com and search for powerlifting gyms in your area. They also list all the competitions in your area. Dont let him waste this ability with some half assed highschool coach, who has no clue about powerlifting. Find a power lifting team with experienced competitors to mold his ability. He has the potential to break records, dont let him throw it away training with amatures.
