Hi ladies.

I am from Australia and 38yrs old. I have two boys..both young..2 1/2 and 1yr..so wanting to now hit the gym and get into shape. I have been looking at the 'feed the muscle, burn the fat' book..so aware diet is VERY important. One thing I found is the oats are very popular...and I HATE Oats..well the way I have tried them anyway. I find them very bland..anyone have any tips on how to make oats taste good? Or any easy breakfasts that don't have them in?

oh stats.. 5'5 65kg (about 140lbs I think) and at the moment about 33% BF..yuck.

thanks in advance :Chef:

sure..

breakfast

1/4 cup of milk skim
1/4 cup oats
1 packet of splenda
dash of spice
pinch of almond slivers
cook in microwave 2minutes 30 seconds
add a little honey (optional) 30 seconds more

eat..

The only thing that makes oats taste better is a ton of sugar and butter and that's not an option! Maybe put some fresh fruits in the oats? I avoid oats for that same reason. Here's my breakfast everymorning.

5 egg whites, 1 whole egg
1 slice bacon
1 slice toast

it is fairly easy to make, just get an egg seperator. Good luck to you and welcome!

I personally like oats with dried cherries or cranberries (1-2 tblsp), cinnamon & 2 pkt splenda.......you can also add 1-2 tblsp SF applesauce or 1/4 of an apple chopped (same cinnamon & splenda) and 1 tblsp of chopped walnuts.....

Some people also like Cream of Wheat or Cream of Rice, but I can't stand the texture....

You also don't have to eat "breakfast food" for breakfast either.....I've had mashed sweet potato + chicken for breakfast & it was good!!

Another very simple option is make protein pancakes out of them:

1/2 c oatmeal - make it w/ water like usual - I microwave it for 1 min 30 sec w/ just enough water to cover the oats - I can't stand runny oatmeal.

when cooked, mix in 1-1 1/2 scoops of a good quality protein mix (mine is VPX Zero carb or seomthing like that - low carb, low fat)
+ 2 splenda packets
+ 1 whole egg
+ 1 egg white

Mix it all up into a batter and throw it in a pan w/ some no-stick spray on it.

It will cook like one giant pancake but I use the spatula to break it in quarters to flip. Cookes pretty quickly, tastes very good.

So this covers both your protein and your carb requirements for your meal. YOu can also add in some cinnamon into the mix for some flavor or else put some no-sugar syrup or some low sugar jelly on it for some flavor.

:arty: Welcome to EF!

You'll love it here because the ladies are amazing!

I eat oats every morning with Splenda and cinnamon. Some days I switch out the cinnamon for apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice.

Occassionally I toss in some Vanilla protein powder and some soy milk for an extra creamy oatmeal. :chomp:

I don't like mixing eggs in my oatmeal. Yuk. Nasty.

I'm with ya' -- I hate oats unless it's OATMEAL COOKIES. :chomp: Too bad those don't count.

Anyway, biggest tip I can give ya' is to avoid carbs til lunchtime. This was the biggest change in my diet I made and it helped me to lose fat, get more protein in my diet to gain lean muscle mass (i.e. "feed the muscle" as you said) and I felt more satieated (full) longer through the morning and on to lunch time.

MY breakfast was as follows:
1/2 c. fat free egg substitute (or egg whites; I like the liquid kind for the ease)
2 slices lowfat cheese (any flavor)
4 turkey sausage links (PORK anything is bad fat; it's the kind of fat that the body cannot break down, doesn't recognize and will never break down in your lifetime. Get it out of your diet -- turkey items are just fine, though).

I would cook the eggs in a bowl in the microwave for 2 minutes, then take it out, cook the sausage for 90 sec, then layer the sausage and cheese back on the eggs and melt it a bit.

Downside: It's not a portable meal per se... but I teach and I take my breakfast to work in a container and eat just before the kids get there, so it IS manageable.

If you need more portability, go for protein shakes. I drink VPX ZeroCarb in chocolate. (Again, no carbs til lunch). Mid morning snacks (IF I need one, which is rare!) would be 1 oz of almonds or cashews or a 2% milk string cheese.

That's the best advice I got for ya' if you want to "feed the muscle". (Steel cut) oats are a great protein source (and fiber source) and low in sugar... but if you're not feelin' it... you just won't later on either.

thankyou so much ladies..some good tips there..definately going to try adding splenda and cinnamon..also making them into a pancake is something I will try as well.

Definately made me feel welcome ladies..thanks

I never liked oats either, OR sweet taters, now I love them :)

For me the pancake thing made it doable w/ my work schedule. Usually I had to shovel down hot oatmeal before work. Now I just make them the nite before, get in my eggs, but I am adding in the protein mix --- in the past for competition I've done completely no protein mix, but eh. I like the stuff. The pancakes are perfect for eating in the car (no I don't eat, put on makeup, chat on my cell AND drive all at the same time...).

My tastes are pretty stripped down so the extra packet of Splenda actually made these things wonderfully tastey for me (originally only put in 1 packet). But if you like a little more flavor, you can put the no-sugar / no fat toppings on them as well - syrup, jelly, fruit, etc.

I have it really simple...may like it may not...
I have 1/2 c oats with water and sweet and low, 1T ground Flax seed, and water...cold..no cooking and best thing I leave dry ingredients in bowl covered with saucer, and in morning add water while I cook my egg whites (not scrambled) just as big omelette...
