Good a proof as any Microsoft is a cancer to the gaming industry

In an interview with NotEnoughShaders, Donnchadh Murphy spoke about the project the studio was working on until it became Microsoft's Kinect Sports team.
Savannah was planned to take place in a realistic savannah environment (shockingly) and would task players with raising a lion cub from birth to adulthood. Along the way, you would have to teach the animal the social and survival skills it would need to succeed in the wild.

"It was an interesting concept and it was fun to work on, we really tried to push the technology of the 360 to get the most out of the graphics. The lions and hyenas were using a custom shell system for the fur, and with the help of a great programmer called Cliff Ramshaw, I think we got some of the nicest looking in-game fur I’ve seen.

"It was only ever a prototype, and it never got a green light."

Murphy also went on to explain the hurdles the former Nintendo developer experienced once it was purchased by Microsoft. He revealed that the company was strongly demoralised by Microsoft's decision to have them target younger audiences, which led to the cancellation of a more realistic Kameo sequel as well as several ideas from Conker's Bad Fur Day creator Chris Seavor.

"There [were] numerous projects that were put forward that I believe would have been huge hits, but Microsoft rejected them one after the other. I remember seeing a couple of prototypes that Chris Seavor had designed and was working on that looked amazing, but alas they got shelved."

Also among the casualties following the Microsoft takeover was Killer Instinct 3, as it didn't fit the brief Microsoft assigned to the company.

"We all wanted to make Killer Instinct 3, but Microsoft [was] more interested in broadening their demographic than making another fighting game," Murphy concluded. "So it never got made, I doubt it ever will."

More here.

Sad, but not surprising. This company will do whatever they can get away with to maximize profits, and people keep falling for it. Hell with 'em; I hope Apple takes them out completely now.

while i'm not disagreeing that microsoft "AS WELL" as sony have diluted the gaming industry, it looks like they just killed a stupid f'ing game that should have been targeted at younger audiences anyway. What "adult" was gonna buy that game? of course it had to be targeted at kids.

Yeah, that along with pretty much everything else Rare was legitimately interested in working on.

And how exactly is a game that actually had more than a shred of originality - and probably also would've taken more than a shred of intelligence to play - a mere "stupid f'ing game"?

The only thing Microsoft has done for industry is make online gaming mainstream on console (which some would argue could be as much a curse as a blessing). Not ironically they're also the only ones charging for it too (unless you include Activision with WoW, and we all know the legacy that franchise has).

There have also been more than a few Indie devs who've voiced frustration with Microsoft's business tactics on XBL and found more support and recognition on PSN. Then we have Valve's own Gabe Newell, who was formerly one of Sony/PS3's harshest critics, doing a 180.

Valve's Gabe Newell Praises Sony's PSN, Bashes Microsoft's Xbox Live

agreed. I don't see such a huge foul here. microsoft has fucking awesome games. Anyone playing left4dead2?

When it comes to gaming Microsoft can do w hat they want with heir platform on x box huge fan base consistently stronger sales than Sony or Nintendo. Devs may butch and moan but they will still make games for x box it won't change there are reasons that dlc for games many a time comes out on xbl before psn. I own both systems and a decent pc gaming rig. The real cancer is gonna be when they integrate the cable box into he x box and it truly becomes the center of your media I your house but the your tethered to the cable company and they find more ways to get money out of you. But hey slate comes out this falls and,ets you control your x box with your I pad.

Looks and plays worse than the PC version, and this is a game that could be run on an old Pentium rig. Also made by the same Valve guy that thinks XBL is a joke in the link above.

The only reason Microsoft is in the console industry is because they can't charge royalties on PC games, and ultimately would love to monopolize the living room since they couldn't exactly get away with it for the computer room.

Being as cash-heavy as they are they'll always find someone to take the bait for things like timed exclusives, DLC, not to mention "exclusive" advertising rights to muliplats. Money in, money out. All they really need is a good marketing campaign to stay on top of sales charts and stupefyingly enough it's still actually working. When was the last time Microsoft actually took a chance on any of their 1st party developers to make a new and original IP like a certain competitor of theirs does routinely. Answer: they don't really care to thanks to the success of their current strategy.

But they're "American" lol...well way to represent. Besides, the back of the console states "Made in China" like everything else this gen.
