We May Know Valve's Big Super Secret

1:50 PM - June 9, 2010 by Kevin Parrish

Recently we reported that Valve Software sent the press an unusual email announcing that the Portal 2 pre-E3 press event was canceled. Instead, Valve would reveal a big surprise that's left many fans and journalists speculating.

Some of us assumed that the company would finally reveal Half-Life 2: Episode 3, the long-awaited installment that feels a bit more like vaporware at this point. However that's not the case--the possibility was shot down by head honcho Gabe Newell.

A mysterious image soon appeared, supposedly from the actual E3 pamphlet. The image sported the Half-Life logo with "Freeman" and "June 14" centered underneath. Newell also nuked any possibilities of what the image would indicate, claiming that it was a fake. Again, we were left wondering just what Valve was up to.

Now rumors have surfaced that Valve will introduce Source Engine 2. An anonymous source said that it's possible Valve will actually show Half-Life 3 running on the new engine, backing up our belief that Valve may have turned Episode 3 into a full-fledged sequel.

Yet if Gordon Freeman isn't part of the June 14 equation, then Valve may simply announce just the engine alone. We tried to get to the bottom of the matter, however Valve has yet to return our emails.

It's reported that Valve's big surprise will not take place before Microsoft (June 14) or Sony (June 15) press conferences. It may be that Valve plans to reveal its surprise at one or both events next week.

We May Know Valve's Big Super Secret

Damn, now that would be the bees fuckin knees.

Half Life 3?

Im fuckin there.

so the big news might be that instead of calling it half life 2 epidose 3, they're just going to call it half life 3? Don't get me wrong, the thought of a new half life game has me sporting a halfie......but If all I'm going to see is a teaser trailer for a game that won't be out for 3 years I'm kind of underwhelmed by this "big secret". So they've got a new source engine...so what?

Dude....Half Life 3 on a brand new engine is the best news since they revealed Half Life 2 on a brand new engine. I doubt they'd cancel a Portal 2 event just to show a teaser trailer. And they can take all the damn time they want making the game if it's turning into a full fledged sequel to HL 2. All these games being released like clockwork are forgotten within a year anyways. Half Life 2 is still being modded after 6 years.

obviously it's big news for Half life shills like myself....but as far as a big secret in the gaming industry? When I saw the thread title I was immediately thinking the onset of cloud computing or something like that.

HL movie directed by Uwe Boll, starring the Rock as Gordon Freeman?

Valve will use their new source engine for the newly acquired rights of Duke Nukem Forever...mark my words.

Nah that won't take off until the U.S. updates its interwebs infrastructure. At this point cloud computing would be little more than another niche market.

I heard a rumor about that...and damned if it wouldn't overshadow any mention of Half Life 3.

DNF needs the ability to make RTS files and build maps like Duke 3d! OMG ATOMIC EDITION FTW! lol

I spent half my childhood building maps and RTS files...Playing Multiplayer against the kid across the street on a dial up modem!!

I downloaded Duke 3d on Xbox Live! If anyone wants to get PWNT in some Duke Nukem hit me up on Xbox! lol

not that freeman should look like a complete pussy...but I don't think there's too many theoretical physicists running around with 21 inch arms and an uncanny ability to raise one eyebrow. Here's to hoping a HL movie stays at least somewhat true to the original valve concept....lolz. I'm usually the one saying that they're not getting big enough dudes to play some of these roles....but in this case someone normal is more apt for the role. The rock could play the black mesa security chief though.....that guy does have a big pretty big part in the story.

And speaking of Uwe Boll - My most anticipated movie in developement, Warcraft, Boll got shot down.

"Director Uwe Boll contacted Blizzard about directing the film, but Blizzard refused. As quoted by MTV news Uwe Boll stated: "I got in contact with Paul Sams of Blizzard, and he said, 'We will not sell the movie rights, not to you... especially not to you. Because it's such a big online game success, maybe a bad movie would destroy that ongoing income, what the company has with it."

Sam Rami will do a killer job. I had no idea he was the executive producer on 13 episodes of Spartacus Blood and Sand, no wonder I loved that so much.

World of Warcraft shown streaming on iPad - PC News at GameSpot

Developer Dave Perry shows wildly popular MMORPG running on Apple's popular new portable via Gaikai; non-Flash version reportedly had to be built from scratch.

Since being introduced on April 3, Apple's iPad has already sold 1 million units, with the new 3G version reportedly selling out within hours of launching last Friday. Game companies have been quick to jump on the touch-screen tablet's bandwagon, with publishers like Electronic Arts releasing iPad-optimized versions of iPod titles, such as Need for Speed: Shift.

Also on board is Gaikai, the browser-based game-streaming service cofounded by veteran developer Dave Perry. This morning on his personal Web site, Perry showed off how his server-based computing service could use Apple's tablet to stream World of Warcraft, the planet's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Specifically, the game displayed was the second WOW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

Perry joked, "Soon I'll be able to play WOW with my Cornflakes!"

Much like OnLive, which launches next month, Gaikai is taking the cloud computing model and applying it to gaming. The company will host various games on its servers and then let subscribers stream them onto their PCs or various other devices, such as the iPad. Graphics processing is handled by Gaikai's servers, meaning high-resolution games can be played on devices with significantly lower-grade technology.

If Gaikai is approved for use with the iPad, WOW junkies will have another way to get their fix on the road.

Perry's promotion of WOW on the iPad does raise some interesting questions, though. Gakai's Web site touts its Streaming Worlds technology as being near-universal thanks to the fact it is based on Adobe's Flash player. The iPad conspicuously does not support Flash, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs vehemently criticizing the application in an open letter last Thursday.

Requests for clarification on how Gaikai is running on the iPad had not been answered as of press time. However, Perry told UK site Digital Foundry that a special version of Gaikai had to be made from scratch to work with the iPad. He said the game was running at a "very crisp" 1024x768 resolution.

"All iPad inputs are streamed through a translation system to the server, so we can remap anything to anything in real time," Perry told Digital Foundry. "We hide a virtual keyboard off to the side, so you can type as well (like to login). It's just a teaser as the iPad just arrived. Once they are done with the video optimization, we will show it off."
