That's what I've been using for the last couple of years.
Any freeware anti spy ware out there? Spybot doesn't load for me anymore, and ad aware won't update.

There are java and ActiveX versions, but my experience has been that the ActiveX version is a bit more reliable - but it required IEs. The java version works, but I've had to restart my browser in some instances because it seems to "stall" after downloading the virus and scan engines....

Rather than pull the drive, try booting from one of the free Linux Live CD's, like the Trinity Rescue Kit. Lets you reset the Admin password, download Avast and AVG, and run them against a drive without starting Windows, which means not giving the rootkit/Trojan/virus a chance to set up any defenses.

Also you can edit malware startup commands out of the Registry, if you're an advanced user.

Best way I know of to rip that shiat out by the roots.

The only argument I'd make is that the vast majority of the LiveCD/DVDs out there will not mount NTFS as read-write without some userland heroics. I have not really used anything other than Knoppix and may have to look into Trinity (as it sounds like it writes), but see no reason why any other LiveCD would take the chance on allowing NFS to be mounted RW by novice users on a "standard" boot. And if a user is that good, why run Windoze at all

That being said, it'd be worth a try if one didn't have a second computer at hand...

Unless someone hands you a known-good (as in paid for) activation you are likely screwed. I can explain in detail if you really need to hear it, but this release is largely uncrackable because Norton engineers have made the software so that it can only register against the Norton database (there is no longer a "phone reg" option). Each purchase lets you install on 3 systems (or 3 times) and then you're done.

I agree, most Symantec products are malware in themselves.
