Facing numbers in?

djeclipse said:
When the numbers are facing inward it gives you more strength as the hard iron is directed towards your body.

Hard Iron? Is that sarcasm or is there such a thing?

I was being sarcastic dude, as I thought you were when you asked "Is there any advantage to doing it this way?".

Were you being serious when asking this question?

i load all the weights on one side of the bar.
lolol

There is no difference. I always face the weight inward so its less of a mental strain to "feel" the weight rather than "see" it. The weight is still there, and having the center of gravity wider since the rims point outward should make practically no significant difference.
Kinda like visualizing a less drastic bar loaded with 3 10's, and 2 45's on the end..
Its just strange. Its easier to have it stable when the heavier weight is closer to the center of your body, but that is about it..
But then again, in some exercises (bent press) it is easier if the weights are further apart- and that is because most of the lift requires equilibrium.

lol... nice responses.

I've always faced them in since I was showed that way back in high school... no idea if it has a benefit (probably not) but i do it out of habit now.

lol at the sarcasm

I always load inward, but for no logical reason whatsoever. although maybe the logic is that they are easier to unload grip-wise that way.

is it me or does it seem like the people that load them outward....just don't know their way around the gym.

i usually see the kids that warmup with 135 for 1/4 reps that load them that way...so everyone can see.

Come to think about it you're right, I hardly see anyone loading the weight numbers out and if it is it's usually some noob. You may be on to something here.

i face them out so people can see how much im lifting....
cause if the numbers were facing inward, no one would be able to tell.

Do you leave enough space between the plates so people can read between the plates so they can cleary see that you have 45, 45, 35, 10, 5 and a 2.5 on there?

No I was serious but didn't state it the right way. I guess I wanted to know why not if it helped. But you got me on the hard iron. I thought you were serious and I was going to call you out.

no i load them close together...
i just put little post-it notes sticking off of each weight and write the amount of weight on them.

Yep, it seems that way to me too - facing out or they mix 'n match. Bugs me when someone works in with me and I face my side in and they have theirs out. Gotta go over and flip it over and they look at ME like I'm strange (could definitely be :p )

Also notice the loudest guys in the gym are the ones doing flys or curls? I've heard these characters discussing all the in's and out and angles and turning the pinkie in or out and so on. I didn't realize they were such technical lifts

I announce my poundages over the intercom before I start so I can still have the numbers face in. Best of both worlds.

:FRlol:

I actually mix and match...and I certainly know my way around the gym. I always try to maximize the amount of area where the plates touch each other. So for 185 I would put the 45 facing in and the 25 facing out. My thinking is that more contact area = more stability. Probably doesn't make a difference though.

Good grief. None of it makes a difference, other than a mental one for some of you freaks! LoL And I take umbrage at the comment that only "total noobs" face the numbers outward. The plates are on the plate holder w/ the numbers facing out . . . I take them from the holder, and put them on the bar. Thus, the numbers remain facing out. Otherwise, I'd have to flip the plates around, which uses valuable energy and muscle that I'll need for my 30th set of monkey-butt pinkey flared flies.

I do like the sticky-note idea though. Would it work the same for those of us working out at home?

yes, just be sure the numbers on the notes face inward towards you....
that way you will know how much you are lifting.

and be sure to stack the weights from smallest to biggest, throw the 25s on first, then 35s, then 45s, this way, all of the sticky notes can be seen. if u stacked from 45 to 25, theyd be out of ur vision so keep that in mind...

Word. I work out at home and do the same thing...damn vain commercial gym lifters facing the numbers inward so it looks clean for the spandex-clad treadmillers. :p Plus, having them out looks cleaner from the only perspective that matters to me.

Do you guys know nothing about lifting? The numbers have to face outwards to allow the chi to flow through the bar and to deflect the negative thoughts of the haters willing you to fail. It's a matter of defence. I thought everyone knew this.

I like to keep the weight even along the entire bar. If I am doing 245 I like to use 8 25lb plates.

I really did have a friend that always left the number out because " I dont want people to think those are 35's" hahahah If your 1rm is 135 I guess that could be embarssing.

Something about the magazine photoshoots seems to dictate that the plates are all facing the camera. So on one side the face out and on the other they face in...

ANYWAY, I've been lifting for like 14 years and I put the flat sides in and the numbers out - just because that's how I do it!

I tried the home-gym yellow-stickies method last night, but one of them fell off during the set. I wasn't sure how much weight I was doing anymore, so I had to stop, reset, get another sticky-note ready, and then try the set again. It's kinda' a pain, but there's no excuse for not knowing how much you're lifting!

I had to use my fingers today to add 45+45+45+45+45+45!!! then, AGAIN
45+45+how much does a BB weigh again????? oh yeah....45... I dont even count the weight anymore... rather I figure the size of the plates and how many... 1 big one and 2 small ones.... thats it. I couldnt give a rip where the numbers face, they go in whichever direction they come off the rack in reverse.... ;)
