Exercising abs on a bulk

I have always been skinny, 140lbs at six foot so am trying to bulk up and have already gained 7lbs but at the loss of some stomach definition. I have a mate who says don't bother with them until I am up to a decent weight, so my question is is losing my abs an inevitable price on a bulk as my body fat will no doubt increase or should I still do abs workouts? Thanks for any help.

6'0" 140lbs? That's incredibly skinny! Your fat content was low but so was your muscle. Put weight on and keep the calories clean. Abs are just muscle/fat content. So just eat a lot of clean calories and workout steady and your abs will be fine. I went from 158lbs to 179lbs in about 9 months and my abs are still very much noticeable.

Thanks, so I should be incorporating abs into my workout? Do you think I should devote a workout day to them or just an exercise or two? An yeah I know I am very skinny I just have never given a crap before, the older I get the more vain I get it would seem.

I never do abs, ever. Just keep fat off and you'll be fine. But if you want to strengthen that area, do a lot of core work. Don't dedicate an entire day to it but depending on your routine, I'd do it once or twice a week.

when you do compound lifts you will automatically workout your abs.

unless you are really obsessed over them no reason to ever isolate them.. pullups and box squats work your abs

and if you want to gain mass you need to lift big and eat big.. there is no other way to do it.

ABS come from bodyfat, and not from exercising them. If you do ab work it should be to try and strengthen your core...not for aesthetics. Diet and cardio will get you that. Working out ABS on a bulk will not help you "keep them"

Cheers guys, think I will just leave be until I have gained the weight was just a little disappointing sure I will get over it.

I believe you should never neglect abs no matter what your goals are. The core plays a huge role in lifting big weights so why neglect it?

if you're a body builder you MUST ISOLATE YOUR ABS to have really good definition. if you're a powerlifter YOU MUST DO CORE STRENGTHING WORK. with without a strong core and solid posterior chain you are NOTHING. : )

You should still do abbs. They are a muscle group like all the others, hit them with heavy weight low reps. You will gain weight faster training abbs hard when you bulk as well
