tommorrow will be my third D-day. i was thinking about going for a heavy single at the end of my workout what do you westsiders think?

I have gone up and still used 80% for a rep and 90% for a rep too. Are you talking about bench or squat? Are you using bands or not?

hey b fold

yes i was talking about the bench. any way i did go for a heavy single. i did 8x3x155 using the mini bands then i did 295x1 and missed 315. this was my 3rd d-day. before i started the ws program my PR on the bench was 290. here is a little back info.

1st ME day 2 board press worked up on sets then 1x1x300 then missed at 315. 2nd ME day was the same missed at 315. 3rd ME day did 4 board incline press with the green bands attached worked up in sets just like the program calls for then failed at 205.

so my question is should i be concerned that 315 did not go or should i take in account that i had already done the 8 sets before hand and be happy with 295 going up. also i missed the lift at the bottom which is where i miss all my lifts about 2-3 inches off the chest. does this sound like my back needs more work? i feel my tris are strong as hell maybe i should train back after chest and save my tris to the end of my workout. also i have a wide grip middle finger on the ring but all my work on ME and D-day has been closer. it felt a little strange to go wide again. what do you guys think?

First off when using bands for speed work on bench...leave them on when you work up in weight. When you got to straight weight and try to lift heavy...the body will be searching for the resistance of the bands. It will be very unstable...and can cause injuries.

As for being slow off the chest...that is usually weak lats. It also could be a function of bar speed. When you finish your 3-4 week wave with the bands and go back to chains...you should get your bar speed back. If not...lower your training percentage.

Try doing some floor presses...these are better at working the particular sticking point that you describe.

thanks for the useful input. i have been doing rows and weighted pull ups for back anything else to help train the lats? one more week and i will go to the floor press. i stayed away from it because it seemed like it would be more tris than lats. i wonder if i should stay with a closer grip when i try PR which for me would be pinky on the ring?

thanks again

I understand the validity of saying that a big upper back helps your bench press by giving you a greater base to push off of, but would somebody please explain to me why you have to have strong lats to bench big? Exactly what do they do during the lift besides stabilizing the weight? Nothing as far as I can tell. So unless you fail the lift because you lose control of the bar, I can't see why you would blame it on lat strength.

Somebody "back" me up or enlighten me on this.

I am a pretty big boy...and my widest grip is pink on the ring. Bring it in closer man.

Think like this -- in a race car you have the gas pedal which controls your speed and the steering wheel will keep you going straight or make you turn. With the bench press, think like this the tri's are your speed and power. The lats are your steering wheel -- the give you control of the bar. If you have big strong lats it will help you control the big weights. Strong lats will also take away that feeling of getting crushed under the bar.

Maybe its how you incorporate your lats, I'm sure you guys know I am new to powerlifting, been wasting 3 years bodybuilding, but I have always had a strong back which translated to a descent bench, anyway, when I bench I call on my lats to blast the bar from the very bottom until my chest then my tri's take over usually in that order, I just incorporate them into my lift and I feel they are the rocket fuel that helps to blast off the rocket (cheesy I know)

Thats my 2cents
