IMO,it was neither his routine nor his genetics...In order for someone to make gains this way,you must reach your "almost" maximum potential...A beginner/intermediate must make sure that he develops every muscle group to its fullest b4 attempting such a routine...once he nears his maximum potential, one can apply such a routine to break plateaus and re-freshen his routine...I beleive that Dorian's success lied in his INTENSE desire to succeed...just my opinion...PS:genetics didn't hurt I'm sure...

I think Da Big is right. I think all bodybuilders who take their sport very seriously, and succeed, are the ones that have a very intense drive to do so. But as he pointed out, I am sure genetics plays a part :D Although Arnold Schwarzenegger said in one of his autobio's, that his genetics didn't have as much to do with his success, as his desire to succeed. So, who knows. Wait was the question again?! LOL

dorian might have had the genetics to grow but if you saw pictures pro juice he was very thin. he did have a very strong determination to win and a great work ethic.

i saw the video he does, i still dont get that he is all about this 1 set to failure plus forced reps, is that enough to stimulate the muscle?? his sets that are previous to his last set are heavy to us, yes, but it doesnt seem to be heavy to him.......i still wonder, what is the best scheme, his, or arnolds high volume training....hmm.........

I always put beginners on higher set workouts, 15-20 sets. They lack the experience and mental focus to do 1 set only.

I most training philosophies are good and should be used periodically. I've done workouts with as little as 5 sets for back and as much as 20 sets.

This type of training takes extreme mind to muscle/isolation of the bodypart. Which most people don't have the ibility to do. This is a much advanced way of training that will not work for your everyday joe..And will lead to injury....

thanks guys, jeff that is a given, that gear comment ;) jeff, what would you guess that dorian would be on before an olympia? gear wise, curious to see what u have to say.....

it just leaves me to believe that there is not one given way to train for the MAX results, you figure, when on gear, you would want to workout in the way that would yield you the best results......

dorian seems to be all about this 1 set thing, and his workouts last under 90 minutes, while including 2 bodyparts at times.....

ronnie seems to like higher reps and more volume, while he does lower reps on power movements.......

jay cutler likes higher reps and more volume....and he does 2 extra reps right after the set after a 5 second pause which makes me thing does he go to failure?

shawn ray doesnt seem to bust his ass to go to failure, only higher volume......

levrone seems to like failure with forced reps, and also does srop sets.....
(these are all based on a large number of videos i have seen recently....)

i guess this question can never be answered, as well as the routine question, meaning how you split up the bodyparts.......
i.e. chest, back, legs, off, shoulder, arms, off.....
or chest and bis, back and rear delts, off, legs, shoulders and tris, off.....

or colemans way, which is God knows what.....

so many ?'s, so little answers that are definitive.....

I used to read everyting I could on his routines back in the day but his philosphy on 1 set trining worked for him because he had trained for so many years and 1 set was all that was needed for him to stimulate his muscles. For the common man more sets are needed to stimulate growth and strength.

So it has a mixture of routine, genetics, a lot of hard work , and sheer determination to be the best.

But that is my opinion :)

and this takes many years to achieve as Mike Mentzer, the one who taught dorian, states.

I have his video and he trains pretty damn hard on his "warm up" sets.

It's the Mentzer philosophy and it works.

The reason that some people fail to see results with this program is that their definition of "complete muscular failure" is very different than the true definition.

Yates was one intense motherfucker and he trained to COMPLETE FUCKING MUSCULAR FAILURE... Sometimes to a fault.

I've followed these principals for the most part for the past 15 years and I don't think I've ever spent more than 45 minutes in the gym during that time.

I do a number of good warmup sets and 3 sets to complete failure and split.

Once complete failure is achieved that early on, what's the point of spending another hour at the gym?
