dont understand about squats..please answer

I have been working out for roughly 2 years. I went from 150 pounds to about 195 now. Anyway, in the 2 years that i have been lifting i never stuck with doing my legs. I dont know why. I guess that i never thought that it was really important. I figure i would wear baggy pants in the summer(which is what i have been doing). Anyway, my arms arent growing as fast now as i would like them too. I heard that doing squats for your legs makes your arms and upper body get bigger. I was wondering if this was true, and if so why does this happen? If i was to start to work out my legs alot would i gain more weight, and would my arms grow noticeable from this over time?? Also, I know that people are going to say i should work my legs anyway, and i am going to start. I realize (and my girlfriend does too), that i look pretty dumb in boxers because my legs are out of proportion to my upper body..Thanks alot everyone. I trully appreciate feeback.
 
Squats are a compound movement and you do work your upper body a little, but I've heard your body releases growth hormone which makes your other muscles, other places grow too. I saw a thread about this a while ago, i'll look for it for ya.
 
If you're so self-conscious about your legs that you wear long pants in summer, I think you should be more worried about packing some size onto your legs as a goal in itself rather than as a means to bigger arms. I always make fun, or at least snicker behind the backs, of guys who are grossly disproportionate(Yes, I'm an asshole.) While I don't have any evidence other than anecdote, I think the body can only grow so large in one area if another is seriously lagging. So, yes, bringing up your legs may well help in gaining new arm size. But I would think of this a positive side-effect rather than a goal.
 
Doing heavy compound movements such as deadlifts and squats work so many muscles at once that the belief is that they increase the body's natural production of testosterone. Plus, it takes so many other muscles to do these exercises that they all tend to grow due to the indirect stimulation.

you still see the squat helping you gain size on your arms.....thats pretty twisted.

anyway......one famous trainer/strength/athelete coach once said that the human body likes to maintain some sort of balance with it self.....and not working other body parts will hold thing likes arms back.

dont know if its true or not.

its not twisted bro the reason they say that is because when u train using the heavy compound movements such as the squat you release a huge surge of testosterone and growth hormone into the system thus helping the other muscles grow indirectly. everyone knows the more test and GH in the blood the more muscle u can build.
 
thanks alot guys..i really appreciate the feedback, and i have a better understanding about the whole thing. I now just started to do legs on the same day as i do chest. Hopefully next summer i wont have to wear long pants lol.
 
I was the same way when i started working out. No legs all upper body. Once i started incorporating legs into my workout i grew faster than i ever did before.

yes u know that u have to train legs now. but dont train them on chest day. train legs on their own day. that way u can go all out on both bodyparts and recover better for each
 
Don't be afraid to squat just get under the bar and do it. You won't regret it. if you have any quaesstions on form then post htem and i'll help but definitly get to work on your legs now. I did the same thing you are and have regreted it. Finally after busting my ass my legs are proportional. legs are a key to a great all around physique
 
I’m not sure what the relationship is. I know that the whole game is about creating the most "anabolic environment" that you can though. This can mean eating lots of protein, using a few supplements, taking steroids or lifting heavy...

I don’t understand the chemistry but lifting creates an environment that is more conducive to muscle growth. Working BIG muscles is even better at creating that environment. Doing legs is the best (natural) way or so I have heard.

All that is hear-say, I can't offer any research to prove my point. What I can testify to, though, is that whenever I hit a plateau (couldn’t loose more fat, couldn't grow my chest/arms/back) busting my ass on legs is always the ticket to making the rest of my body follow along....

BTW: doing legs SUCKS, its pure hell. TORURE in fact. God I hate doing legs. Every day I do 'em I feel like I am about to collapse and die for the rest of the day. God, I love doing legs....
