it started out with a meeting in a bar and some drinks, then I went out to dinner and had more drinks, and then went out to hear live music and had more.

open source means FREE software. Meaning companies can run software on their big servers without paying a cent.
Which of course is BAD business for people like sco!
Charging for linux is bullshit. That system was put together by unpaid programmers all over the world. Now these morons want to charge cuz apparently a few lines were "copied" from them.
Open source technically means the source code is open and available for review. It doesn't necessarily mean free as in cost, although I'm all about the free shit myself. Alot of the top Linux coders do get paid by companies like Sun, IBM, Red Hat and HP to work on Linux full time.

Nobody charges for linux. All those distros only charge for the physical media and documentation. RedHat, SuSE, and others make their money from selling their support. The OS is proven to be a viable/cheap/fast alternative to Windows, so companies are willing to pay RedHat et al to guarantee them technical support/service if they ever need it.
Sun is trying to adopt the same business model when it comes to their own Linux distro. This article is confusing because it seems very contradictory to where the future of Sun may lie. The company has been wishy-washy over whether they are going to throw their full support behind linux or not. I don't remember what their last move was, but I do know they had a whole line of linux based machines. From what I've heard there are two groups within Sun working on their own business models. One is trying to push their age old business model forward and try to rely more on proprietary OS/hardware while the other group is scouting open source as a fallback plan.
I'm sure Sun is showing this latest face to try to distance themselves from SCO's bullshit lawsuits.
