Dog owners, I gotta ask something

I should also point out that "dog owners" don't actually "own" their dogs...the dog is usually considered a child or friend.

Maybe that's why hard core anti-cat people don't "get" the relationship we have with our cats. One of the appeals about cats is the fact they get potty trained and can be left alone with food for a week won't eat it all in one sitting. Cats are teenagers, dogs are perpetual toddlers :lmao:

Look, I've owned both in my life, and multiples of them, at that. I don't dislike dogs (although, there are some breeds that are a waste of kibble, and what some bad dog owners do to their dogs by spoiling them makes me dislike those animals). That being said, I can't say I miss the constant demands of dog ownership (particularly with these last snow storms, man would taking the dog out have been a hassle).

When I find myself being very irritated with the stupid things they do and all the maintenance they require expressly due to to said stupidity, I remind myself the stupidity is our fault as humans. We made them stupid. Wolves aren't stupid. They are as self sufficient as an animal can be, but for millions of generations we bred them for particular traits for our own benefit. Now we have dogs that will walk into the street sniffing the ground right in front of an oncoming car, eat until they herniate themselves, eat them own shit, eat cardboard because it smells like the food that was once stored in it, and just generally be so idiotic you want to kick them.

Nitchske was a "self-feeder"..I would fill up his bowl every few days and he managed his weight quite well. Most of my dogs were outside dogs when I was growing up and they required zero maintenance other than dropping food off in the bowl once a day. Nitchske loved getting back to the wild visiting my parents where he could spend all day outside stalking small fury creatures, he especially enjoyed chasing cats. His requirements for supervision in a city environment was a function of humans and not his being a dog. Nitchske was great at accepting cats in the house but dealing with cats litter box and spraying is a much bigger pain in the ass than living in the country with a dog that is free to come and go as it pleases.

Never met a dog that would do that, ever. But there are oddities among all species. I have a cat that responds nicely to numerous verbal commands, a first in more than 40 years.

As for spraying, that is a function of neutering, male or female. A neutered cat that pees out of the box is either suffering from urinary problems (which happen very commonly because people feed crap food) or has territoriality issues with other cats in the house.

I live in an urban area. Letting any animal roam outside would be beyond the height of irresponsibility (and in general is unless you live in an extremely rural area, and when I had horses, loose dogs were a reason to get the gun). Heck, I consider owners who walk their dogs without leashes around here inconsiderate as hell. I mean, my own son was hit by a car (not hard, but it happened) about a block from the house. One of my dogs was killed right next to the house. Last summer we had to dispose of someone's cat that was lying in front of our house, you get the point.

ok, any more verbal bashing of dogs and I break the other three...
