I don't generally do any ab work but I want to start. I want to do them mainly for looks. I think there suspose to help with squats though aron't they?

I train abs 3 or 4 times per week. That is why they are so big. If you plan on having a big squat you had better train abs hard. I can't help you much on training abs for looks. I try and keep mine insulated so they don't get cold.

If you are doing lots of heavy squats and deadlifts, though, your abs are likely to become distended. Great for strength, maybe not the best for looks. When I used to fight, my waist was pretty small, I wore 32 pants, and when I made weight, they were loose. But to squat big, you need a sturdy base, and big ass, big hips, and big abs are the base.

they are a must for a big squat and dead. I train them every off day which is three days a week and occasionally for a forth. I f your abs ae week its like squatting and dedlifting with a sponge in your mid section, some of the power will be lost and not be directed to the bar , wheras if you have a brick in their it will all transfer to the bar.

I used to have a smaller stomach , but funny thing is about mine you can see abs when flexd, but my stomach is bigger up top. Its looks bloated. But the added size helps with squatting. It gives you a sturdy base. Read the article that 1 dawg put up for me by louie simmons. Its under the thread belwo that say powerlifterjay, Louie says if you want nice mid section your in the wrong sport, a strong midsection should be thick and powerful. Not an exact quote but you get my point.

Funny thing is as i right this i have on a pair of size 33inch Tommy's. Its like if i eat lite for 2 days my waist size really decreases. But my weight stays the same. But eat lite for days it doesnt go down anymore. Its like i walk around with mygut topped off, once some spills its happy, at a slightly smaller size.

Do abs for power not looks! Because i can tell ya now most powerlifters would probably have a nice 6 pack if they did cardio, thats what it will take to bring out your abs. Cardio.

I train abs hard and often. It shows, mine are very big and blocky, but strong as hell. I train them every lower body workout and every extra workout. It ends up being 6 or so times a week. It works I just vary the exercises and weights. Abs are very important to a big squat or deadlift. Your abs can NEVER be too strong. The late Matt Dimmel could do 135# in the spread eagle situp for 10-12 reps, can't remember reps exactly. I've done this before and it is hard as shit but helps and my stomach is sore for days.

By the way when training abs, don't try to isolate them, you want to work the hip flexors and the other muscles that work together to hold your core up.

Belly...

I need to work my damn abs & obliques more. My abs & obliques are my weakness, yet I still don't concentrate on them. Can you say, "I'm an idiot for neglecting the single most important aspect of Westside training." Train your freakin' weaknesses. From this point forward I am going to train my core a minimum of 4 times a week. I will never total what I want unless I strengthen my core. Damn, this post turned into a self-motivational tool.

I'm not above being shamed into self improvement. In fact, it can be a very strong motivational tool. Keep it coming! I'm shameless!

I believe there is a thread a lil lower down on ab workouts, Since you got the answer that workin abs are good, NOT FOR LOOKS, then you should probably see what ab excercises everyone uses. Just scroll down bro
