Does anybody here do this?

gtrcivic said:
yeah, i've been doing for the past 3 wks..2 during the day and the last one i slam before i head to bed...

Well what I do is that i wake up at 4:30 to be at the gym at 5am. So I take a shake...hit the gym. Get out of the gym and have another shake. And then every 3 hours thereafter...I eat. I have 3 solid meals for the meals after my 2nd shake. And then at night time at around 7pm I have a shake and maybe a rice cake. And then right before bed I have a Cassein/Flax shake.

Its just that i read in certain places that it says NOT to eat anything prior to going to bed. Because the metabolism slows down while sleeping. And any food in my stomach will turn to fat.

I drink a shake before bed….

I mix

20grams ON 100% whey

20 grams of ON 100% Egg

15 Grams Irontec Casein.

Does a body good!!

Thats a load of crap. It is best to eat before you goto sleep, I always eat a meal or drink a slow digesting shake before bed.

I also don't believe the "turning to fat" thing before bed. Your body is still metabolizing nutrients while you sleep and I would think that if you work out in the evening 5-7pm'ish and then have a big dinner after the gym, then by the time you go to bed at 11pm it is time to eat again any way. I always down a chocolate protein/milk shake before going to bed.

Not really. It depends on his goals. It will create a nice positive nitrogen balance which will be great for decresing catabolism/promoting anabolism. However...fat gain verses maintaining his lean-ness will entirely rely on total calories for the day. If he's already hyper-caloric for the day, protein and flax (FAT) will cause fat gain. Not as bad as a bag of potato chips of course but if his caloric needs are met for the day, fat gain will be inevitabale. It's a great choice for people bulking or even maintaining (if the calories are calculated out in advance) but not for dieting IMO unless you have a great metabolism (and you wouldnt be dieting if you did LOL).

Carth: if you find that youre gaining fat---cut out the flax. GO egg or caseinate protein only. If that still puts on fat----lower the protein amount until satisfied.

been drinking a 50g protein shake w/ 5 carbs every night before bed for past 10 years. do it. no reason anyone serious about diet and nutrition shouldn't.

Yeah, i heard that too, but also read where its good to just slam a protein shake (0 carbs) before bed..something about keeping protein in you during the 6-8 hrs..so far its helped me out alot with the cycle im on right now...

My workout is at 5-6pm..so i take the shake between breakfast/lunch, between lunch and workout, then post workout shake...figure wk 4 next week and i'll up the protein even more.

Well since your body is recovering while you sleep. I wouldn't see why a protein shake wouldn't enhance the recovery process.?

Would you want your body to go 8-10 hours without any sort of amino? Why not, this is when your body rebuilds itself. I actually read in MD that protein synthesis does not peak until the following day.

Somewhat correct, it is best to not eat before bed for the normal overweight public out there trying to stay leaner and not have a heart attack. Those of us feeding larger amounts of muscle and wishing to stay in an anabolic state vs. catabolizing on our muscle for fuel while sleeping, must indulge in some nutrients before bedtime. When I am leaning down I wont eat the late night meal, nothing more than protein with little or no carbs. At the present time, my last meal of the day sometime occurs while laying in my big bed watching my big tv with dreams and aspirations of waking up bigger :)

Going to agree with my boy Indy....that statment of not eating before bed is for your "general" public that doesnt get into the gym or are not acctive...as much as we are...that being said.....its always a good idea to have something before bed..personally i eat 1 - 1/2 cups cottage cheese with a handful of peanuts...works wonders...or you could just slam the shake before bed...

I too have heard a protein(casein) shake with flax is the best before bed because that's when the body recovers the most and flax slows down the protein synthesis process down therefore your optimizing all your resources. I personally have been doing this all summer and plan to continue it for as long as i can stomach it.

1.optimum (combo blend of proteins)55g chocalate (2 scoops)
2.ANPb (arrow) 2 scoops
3.skim milk 12 0z
4.1 bannana
5.small shot of flax seed oil (nature's way)
IMO (best tasting shake ever)

I guess you guys are right. Most studies out there are done on NORMAL people.

We are not normal people. We are bodybuilders!!!

I'm such a lazy ass to go up stairs to make a shake before bedtime, but lately, i'm more motivated to do so...ON Choc 23g/scoop 2, w/banana and 16oz milk...feel much better and not as hungry inthe morning.

DAMN RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!! (indy is right)

I have a shake before bed. When your body goes catabolic when you sleep taking a shake keeps it towards the anabolic side.

I take MHP's Proabolic 12 hour protien before bed (30mins) It is time released so your body and metabolism is feeding all night long. Cassien is good too being milk takes up to 12 hours to completely break down..but i like Proabolic.

As long as you are not spiking your suger your fine.

if you have cassein protein youre set..
but i skip on the shake and eat some turkey, chicken or beef before bedtime instead.

digest slower thus a slower release of amino acids while sleeping.

How many of you get up in the middle of the night to eat? I down my shake before bed but 4-5 night per week I wake up around 1:00 or 2:00 hungry as hell!

I get up and chow down a cup of bran flakes with some splenda…

if im up to take a piss, ill make a quick round in the kitchen for some cold left overs.

The whole you get fat if you eat at night is just not true. If it was anyone who works overnights would be fat bastards, are they not suposed to eat at all since they are up all night? It's all about total calories throughout the whole day. Now that I'm in offseason mode I'll eat ervery 2 hours as long as I'm up, I prefer a solid meal before bed but a shake is a good way to keep the calories down and nutrients high. When I'm getting ready for a show I only have a set amout of food that I can eat for the day so I try not to stay up any more than 3 hours after my last meal.

i always pour a little olive oil into my late night shake before bedtime. i heard somewhere that the presence of fats will slow down the digestion of the protein, so my theory is that this shake will last longer in my stomach and slow release while i sleep..
anyone else heard of this ?

I did the olive oil thing for a while until i switched to flax seed oil. Flax seed oil is better and does slow down the protein synthesis process. Olive oil is really just to add extra calories.

That is why I take Cassein with Flax. Cassein is a slow digestig protein. Anywhere from 3-5 hours. With Flax added to that...add another hour or two.

BINGO!!!

Either Casein shake and flax or peanuts
Or
Drycurd and some ANPB!! Works wonders...esp. since I traiin in the afternoon or evening!

I usually have a shake b4 bed as well as rising. I have a similar schedule to Carth were I'm haveing a shake every 3-5 hours throughout the day.

I never said I was having a shake every 3-5 hour throughout the day. I said Cassein digests slow. It takes about 3-5 hours for it to digest.

Cottage cheese is good stuff. But too much sugar ( lactose ) and sodium!

Too much sugar my ass bro. The sodium part I agree with but too many shakes a day over whole food is shit. I forgot to say that I add 1/4 almonds before bed also. Eating cottage cheese leaves me A LOT fuller than drinking a shake. IMO

i always do a shake before bed. sometimes with a small meal. i think its better to drink the shakes and not sleep on sugar and sodium.

Here you go read this....it takes 7 hours to digest..with flax your looking at 9 hours of fueling. It also prevents your body going in to a catabolic sate.

Micellar casein, an extremely slow digesting and rich protein source that continues to feed your muscles long after whey proteins have dropped off. In fact, studies with this undenatured form of isolated casein protein (Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1997 Dec 23;94(26):14930-5) have demonstrated it to sustain steady amino acid elevations for an incredible 7 hours. It was shown to offer a strong anti-catabolic effect not noticed with fast digesting whey protein, and actually fostered a much more positive overall net protein balance in comparison.

While whey protein may increase protein synthesis to a very high degree, higher than casein, scientists are now recognizing that micellar casein is much more important in preventing muscle breakdown. In fact, additional research is demonstrating that the slow and sustained release of amino acids from micellar casein can cause a “timed release” trickle of amino acids into the bloodstream which can last for as many as 7 full hours after ingestion.

Micellar casein is the natural, undenatured form of casein found in milk. It is separated from milk by means of ultrafiltration, without the use of chemicals, which increases the amount of bioactive milk peptides that support immune function as well as enhance muscle growth. A property of micellar casein is that it may have the ability to form a "gel" in the gut. This provides a steady release of amino acids into the blood stream, which makes it an excellent choice for a long lasting anti-catabolic protein.

I love Casein! I don't even fuck with Whey! Only for pre and post workout do I use Whey. Other than that...if I have to have a shake. Then its Casein I take.

wHAT kind of casein do you take?

Aussie Casein from proteinfactory.com. I used to take Micellar. But Aussie is a bit cheaper. So I guess I'll stick to that for now. The best tasting breakfast shake ever for me was Banana flavored Micellar Casein with 1 cup of oatmeal. Blend that son of a bitch up and enjoy!

always eat before you go to bed, something, if your dieting, glutamine works good, if your not anything and everything you can stuff in your mouth before bedtime does..:)

I agree. If your not eating every 2 hours whey will be out of your system to fast.
