Do Ketogenic diets make u retain water???and drop t3 levels???

I came of a dnp cycle recently...and i have started doing an Atkins type diet to try and maintain the weightloss that i had ( after my 2 carb up after dnp of course) . Well lately ive noticed that ive had fewer bowel movements and i seem to be retaining water especially around the face. Well what i wanted to know is...do keto type diets (atkin's) make u retain some water. Have any of u had any personal experiences wit this. Also...before i forget, i read that keto type diets lower t3 levels alot. So does this mean that they do more harm than good. Please help me otu anyone wit experience in this.

Dear Confused,

1)
a)After DNP use, you will retain water..period...It generally takes a person anywhere from 5-9 days to drop water that has been retained after DNP.
Also, you will keep some water even after the 9 days due to the carb-up.

b) A two day carb-up is not sufficient to get your T3 to normal and to supercompensate your muscles. You need at least a 3 day carb-up (no less than 600g carbs a day). Afterwards, you need to follow a 50/40/10 (carbs/protein/fat) diet for at least 5-7 days. Then, and only then, you can start a Ketonic diet.(i.e. Atkins)

2)
a) 'Ketonic' diet do sometimes make you retain water due to the Lowering PH levels in your blood (my personal belief). But, generally 'Ketonic' diets should make you drop water; thus, you need to give the diet some time and you'll see that after about 2-3 days the water will shed.

b) Keep in mind, your DNP use will have an impact on the 'Ketonic' state. especially if you tried to descend into 'Ketosis' only 2 days after DNP use.

3) No, 'Ketosis' does not lower T3. It is the lowering of calories that lowers you "metabolism" and, in turn, lowers T3. Just like in any other diet: even a minor 5-10% deficit in calories can decrease T3 and burn muscle.
