Dips for tricep strength?

Anyone feel that dips have helped them get stronger in the bench? I know some say yes and some say no but I wanted to hear some PL's opionions..... Thanks to all....

Weighted Dips...

I believe that dips (weighted) are excellent at developing strength and size in the upper body. They are good to throw into your exercise rotation every now and then. Dips can definitely help increase your bench press.

Interesting thing about dips is that I have an old Westside Bench video with George Halbert (lotsa hair) doing quarter dips with a training partner. They have wheels strapped to them but they only do the top few inches of the dip (lockout portion). I havent seen any powerlifters mention dips lately I think that it is because dips can stress out the delts if they are done in a full range of motion. Also I dont know iuf dips are needed really to build the triceps when there is such a large amount of tricep ecercises to choose from including close grip bp, board, tri ext, etc....

georges hair looks okay compaired to the dude he is training with.

i think one of the major things they are trying to achieve with the 1/4 dips was explosive strength. starting 3/4 of the way up (resting on a box) then exploding up in a normal dip fashion

Prior to westside training I used to do bench to bench weighted dips. I felt that doing these once a week helped my elbows get stronger at the time I was doing these with 200lbs on my lap for a set of 6-8 depending how my arms felt. I believe this is why my elbows got stronger and so did my tris. I see how they can work if you were to do 1/4 or 1/2 dips to improve your lockout.

Dip seam to be hard on my shoulder....anyone else have this problem......Vtech I take it your a Honda man?

I think weighted dips are very benificial but if they stress your shoulders leave them out. In my case my shoulder does not allow me to do these.

Dips...

Dips can be very hard on the shoulders because they allow an extreme range of motion. In addition, a wide set of bars coupled with additional weight can really stress the entire shoulder girdle. I agree with others, caution must be used.

Ok, if dips are bad cause they cause a full range of motion for your shoulders, i guess I could try them as 1/2 or 1/4 ROM for lock out strength? I actually hear most people speaking of doing them like this anyway, but thought full range would have been best for complete tricep strength....will see how it goes.....Thanks
