Desktop Computers - which to buy?

I dont know much about laptops, but i like my dell desktop pretty well
they also have a 24/7 customer service and sometimes they actually help
HP has a customer service, but they charge you if your warranty is out of date

but seriously, i like my dell alot better than i liked my HP's
I dont know about sony, and my mom has had alot of problems out of her gateway, but i dont know if it was because it was ME or the computer, and when she would call for customer service, they sucked
 
Build your own, or get one built from a local clone shop. Name brand desktop computers are jokes.

Will any of those companies sell you a system that actually has a real video card in it, and not just video on the motherboard that uses system RAM?
 
If you want one that will least likely flake out on you, then get an IBM tower with a monitor brand of your choice. Dell and their competition is value based and while... a value, they can have their share of problems. Mine's been pretty good so far. It also depends on the types of protection you get on your pc to avoid viruses and such.
 
Import question is what do you want to do with it? Are you doing any CAD work, or anything that would benefit from a high end graphics card? Or...just surfing, email and writing stuff up in MSOffice. Don't need much horsepower for that.

And the ever popular...what's the budget question.
 
Had a Compaq desktop. Good quality. No probs
Have a Toshiba laptop. Cheap ass quality. Half the keys fall off (glad i took that typing class in high school) screen turns a shade of blue (Not good when looking at porn) And it turns off by itself sometimes.

I need a new computer :evil:

My reason for mentioning the graphics card is that the next version of Windows is going to require some serious graphics hardware if you want to use all its features. But then I guess most people never upgrade from the operating system that came with their computer.
 
I bought a Dell this past July for my guest bedroom for a ridiculous low price off eBay. It arrived here brand new from the Dell factory itself. Fully loaded to the gills with anything you can think of. Under $400

My company a few weeks ago sent me a Sony VCG that costs about $1900 and guess what? It performs no better than my Dell.
 
Avoid Gateway/eMachines like the plague.

Sony is pushing overpriced non-standard stuff that doesn't hold up very well, and also has much corporate Evil for which they must atone.

I'm looking at Mrs. Digger's Compaq and wondering why a 1.8GHz machine is so crapulently slow. No spyware, and I just put in a memory upgrade and a video card -- both helped but it's still slower than my XP box that's running at half the CPU speed. Cheap hard drive, I guess.

So I'd say Dell, through gritted teeth. Building your own is not for someone who wants the damn thing to Just Work -- Dell can put together a usable box cheaper than I can get the parts.

Or try real hard to go Apple. The 20" iMac says "Creative Professional Here!" when you have clients in.

I have a dell at work but had to buy a higher end graphics card from another company to put in it. They offer a few good ones but the program I am running didn't call for any of them


Vel, I've been working on dell for a few years now, My only complaint is every system i've had gave me trouble with the DVD burner/CD burner.
 
Always buy mine from small companies that allow me to customize however I want. This last one is running on 4 years old and still kicks ass (2 gig)

Yep, I've worked on 5 different Dell the past 5 years - 2 notebooks and 3 desktops and every single has a burner malfunction - PISSES ME OFF TO NO END!

What sort of graphic card do you use?
I'll be doing a lot of the autocad on this new computer.

IBM has the best customer service in the business. For a laptop, I wouldn't consider anything else. I haven't seen one of their desktops since the old PS/2 386 days.

Dell has done the best marketing job in the industry, since they've got practically everyone giving the kneejerk "get a Dell" advice whenever anyone asks "what computer should I buy?"

I don't know about their desktops, but their Vaio laptops tend to use proprietary drivers for the hardware, which seem to often be kinda flaky.

My HP burner went out and they refused to make it good. I went round and round with them, until I finally gave up. Found out later that 2 other people I know had the same problem. I know that it doesn't mean crap to HP, but I'll never buy another one.
 
I build my own.

I research online what are the components I want, then research online for the best prices, then order it all and put it together.

Only support I need is warranty exchange (which is normally 2 years on most components)

The only way to go

right now i have a NVIDIA Quadro4 750XGL. For Autocad, if you aren't doing 3d work you prolly don't have to go as high end. I work on my laptop at home that just has a lower in card and it works fine. With this 3d modeling i do at work it wasn't enough.

As for Dell's disk drives, OMG i get pissed every week when its time to burn a backup of my models, I have tried everything to get this damn thing to work with no luck. It about time to replace my CPU so hopefully i can convince them to just purchase a seperate DVD burner and let me install it.
 
Give a friend 50 dollars to build you one designed for the apps you use.

DO NOT BUY A NAME BRAND LIKE DELL, COMPAQ, IBM

Their home desktop models SUCK ASS.

BTW I build operating systems on all those platforms for a very large utility company.. I spend ALL day troubleshooting their drivers, hardware issues and dealing with their tier 2 and 3 help desks.


BTW erzulie I have that exact same card.. I love it.. its actually a great card for gaming.

I concur. This is how I have done the last 5 of my systems. Find a local shop, tell what you want to do with it and your budget and get the best you can afford.

Dell. I'Ve had Dells since 1999 and none of them failed. I still have two of them and they work great. Customer service (at least in my area) is A+.
 
I'm on my 2nd Dell with absolutely no problems. Last one never gave 1 problem but it just became out of date.

Some people aren't smart enough to maintain their computer then blame it on the company when something goes bad.

How well do big, processor-intensive programs like AutoCAD run in an emulator? It's enough of a system hog when run in its native environment. 3D rendering will bring a system to its knees.
