deadlifts best for lower back?

GMs for back?

I thought GMs were for glutes and hammies? I realize they hit the lower back to some degree but just about anything I do for glutes and/or hammies will affect lower back as they are tied in together there somewhere.

Could someone clarify this for me?

But SLDLs are for glutes? I thought I just read somewhere that SLDLs were bad. I get the feeling I need to stop reading so damn much and just do what has worked for me personally in the past.:(

SLDL's are great for hammies.

Totally agree with spatts. You should be feeling sldl in your hams. If you are feeling a lot work happening in glutes and erectors then your form is off. While doing sldl you must keep a VERY straight lower back, pretend like you have a backbrace on and CANNOT bend your spine. Make the hams do the lift and concentrate on feeling the pull there. Start with a very light weight and think about the form.

Yes, I do feel SLDLs in hammies, all the way from the top of my knees to the tie-ins with the glutes (ya know the place where you get smilies from tanning). But I have a very strong lower back and I am a stickler for correct form, so I dont have any problems with sore lower back. And I dont want to develop my erectors anymore than they already are; it would throw my symetry off.

Thanks for clearing things up for me! :)

SLDL are the KING (or queen as the case may be) for hamstring development. Utilized right they cant be beat.
I do squats, leg presses, hack squats (with foot placement emphasising hams) and then SLDL.
The stretch is pure ecstasy! They leave my hamstring so mashed up they feel like SPAMstrings!

As for deadlifts, I dont care for sumo stance. I think its mainly a powerlifting stance for maximum weight, and the exaggeration of the stance causes the outer sweep of the quads to be left out too much. It can alse be hard on the knees...

Squats are the best exercise for EVERYTHING below the waist.
Dont get me going on people with their excuses not to squat.

I have bad knees

I dont want it to make my hips wide

I already have good leg development, I just do extensions now to "isolate"

Im a big sissy wimp who is afraid of effort (wait, they dont say that... thats what they mean.)

Indeed....and to go even further....squats are also an excellent (albeit indirect) exercise for everything ABOVE the waist as well...

No other exercise incorporates as many muscles groups and induces GH release like a heavy set of squats. I've heard it said (and agree wholeheartedly):

"If you don't have squats in your workout - you don't have a workout!!!"

If you want to work lower back, GENERALLY Stiff legged deadlifts are the best. good mornings are ok, but you have to be careful. Weighted hyperextensions are the most direct exercise fo this region. I do regular deads, but since I do them so heavy , and along with very heavy squatting I get enough lower back stimualtion, but that's me.
If its hamstrings you wnt to work, try a superset of some type of leg curl movment and stiff legged deadlifts-the first movement will prexhaust the hamstrigns and remove the weak link- the lower back thus putting more stimulation on the hamstrings. Good luck
