Deadlift question....Yup, another...

JOKER47

Elite Mentor
Sometimes when I am deadlifting heavy, my legs will straighten out early in the lift, and I end up essentially SLDL'ing the weight up.

My question is this: Is this identifying a weakness that I have? Or is it a lack of concentration causing my form to break?

If it's a weakness, what is it? If it's form, I can deal with working on that.:D

FYI, I am doing conventional deads.

Thanks,
Joker

Same here, it seems like the heavier the weight gets the more I SLDL it. I'm pretty sure if I focused on using my legs more I could at least move the weight faster and get it up more explosively.

sounds to me like your quads are the weak point. if you're straightening out your legs, your body is going directly to the lower back to get the weight moved up as opposed to using quad strength to drive it up in the first part of the movement. what kind of weight are you using on heavy deads and what do you squat normally with? you are probably deading with a lot more than you squat, and instead of using your legs to drive the weight up(i.e. trying to drive your feet through the floor), it's resorting to your lower back and hams.

I read that arching the back and flexing the lats, while pushing the ground away will fix that, as opposed to pulling the bar up

Thanks for the reply's guys.

Supersizeme - Yes, my squat is way under my deadlift. About 1.5 times less. Guess I need to focus on that.:D Thanks.

CoolColJ - That is how I try to do all my deads. But, it seems to fall apart when it gets heavier.

Looks like a combination of focusing on my squatting AND my deadlift form are both in order.

Thanks for the help,
Joker

You really need Hannibal to post on here with his thoughts on the matter...seriously...

I really am thinking hams here...

I was hoping both you and Hannibal would have some input.:)

How would my hams being weak cause this?

Thanks,
Joker

I was having the same problem using a conventional stance... Never could seem to iron it out, so I switched to Sumo for the past 5 months... And now my conventional form and strength has improved. I don't lock my legs as early... So kinda makes me think my hams were the weak area as well since I use them hard in my sumo stance.

if your legs are straightening out first then your legs are a lot weaker. Basically your back is taking the brunt of the weight since your legs are lacking, try working on squats and lessen the weight on deadlift to work on your form....

Another thing that might help (and this helped me) is to look up at the corner of the wall and celiing when you deadlift. This will keep your head up, and can help you maintain proper form. It worked for me, at least.
