If my lower back is hurting...not to the point of a strain...does this mean i am training correctly...i am performing the movements correctly...keep in mind this is only the third time i have done them...

I have fairly good deadlift form and my back hurts from them. Your chest hurts after training chest...right? Why shouldn't your back hurt after you train back???
If your lower back is hurting, you could possibly be rounding your lower back during the lift. Not a good thing. You need to strengthen your lower back. Perform more good mornings and reverse hypers. I find that when I don't keep up with good mornings, my dead suffers.
Nornerz: Sumo style of lifts are more glute dependent - therefore, if you need to work on your glutes; these be the exercise! Typically you can also lift more using a sumo style then a general style of dead or squat.
When I go into "sumo style" of training I use a 5x5 protocol. 5-sets of 5-reps for each exercise.
