Cycling my weight training

I have been dealing with a lot of injuries. My physical therapist recommended I cycle my weight training. This would give my body a chance to recover. Has anyone tried something like this before? His idea was to train four or five times a week for one week, then take an entire week off, and then go again the next week. He said that will give my body a chance to repair itself in between training.
