I have mild degenerative disc disease. I tried to work through it, but the pain and stiffness was intolerable. So now, I'm pursuing bodybuilding.

Sorry to hear and goodluck with the bodybuilding!

It was quite a disappointment at first. Everyone has goals and it appears my powerlifting goals are out of reach. I'm a very competitive person and weight training is a HUGE part of my life. Guess that's why I'm leaning towards bodybuilding now.

I heard active release techniques do wonders for degenerative disc disease. Hell, it does wonders for everything else, so I don't see why not.

To quote Dr. Leahy:

"The major cause of back problems is a process called cumulative trauma disorder. This is exactly what we've been talking about. You do something like work all day, standing or sitting, and typically the deeper back muscles in most people are not as strong as they should be, so they stay tight. This will form scar tissue inside the muscle. Now a couple of things happen. One, the scarring shrinks so it makes the muscle short and it blocks the circulation and hurts. Mechanically it's not correct, so then you start affecting the mechanics of the spine and the discs, resulting in degeneration."

I have been investigating some of the treatments out there. I know I don't want surgery. And I definately don't want it to progress any further. I'm also being realistic and thinking about the future...playing with kids and such one day.

I threw my first two discs out of place and had them pushed back in.. still trying to recover. I hit light squats now (no more than 135) for reps and many exercises for recovery (thanks to revex). I hope to get back 100% for the fall and continue with my goals.
