Can squatting with the Smith machine still be effective?

I second the front squat motion... Had a hernia operation last fall(inguinal) That is all i have done since.

I had the patch inserted down there, what did you have?It is supposed to heal stronger than the original wall..I had just tried the fronts, cause i thought it would be a little less stressful to the area, and fell in love with them....
