"Pretty advanced" and "going for the hulk look"? What percentage of people in the gym fall under those categories? Probably around 1%... if that.

I agree that there are many exercises that you can do elsewhere. However, very few people have the motivation to get in the workouts they need when they're not in the environment. Especially for this dude... he's just starting out, trying to lose some weight. People in those situations generally need the motivation from the gym atmosphere the most... at least from what I've seen.

I couldn't disagree more. If you believe your first statement, ""Pretty advanced" and "going for the hulk look"? What percentage of people in the gym fall under those categories? Probably around 1%... if that.", then your second statement, "the motivation from the gym atmosphere " makes no sense. That makes it sound like only 1% are getting the motivation they need. I would argue that the first statement is correct and that only about 1% of the people you see in a gym really need to be there to achive the results they seek.

I think everyone that said diet and a gradual ease into exercising is correct. Depending on your size, simply taking a walk around the block every evening could be a good start. I don't think you need to go to a gym. You could go to Wal-Mart, buy a bench and a pair of dumbbells and start with that...depending on your level. Don't forget, LOTS of people have gym memberships they never use. You either have the motivation or you don't. It all starts with YOU, have the motivation and you will find ways to eat right and excersise cheaply.

What I was saying is only 1% of the people that go to the gym are "advanced and going for the hulk look." That 1% are usually self motivated. The rest of the people are usually there because they find the gym atmosphere to be more motivating than working out at home (not to mention that there's much more equipment). Working out in your basement isn't particularly motivating unless you're already self motivated... most people starting out aren't. I didn't say this at all; "only about 1% of the people you see in a gym really need to be there to achive the results they seek"

The problem I see here is that he's going to end up doing cardio and not much else if he's working out at home. Taking a walk around the block gets old quick. You certainly don't need to go to a gym... but if you're new to weight training, how are you supposed to learn correct form if you don't have other people to watch or a trainer to help you?

This is very wise... "Don't forget, LOTS of people have gym memberships they never use. You either have the motivation or you don't. It all starts with YOU, have the motivation and you will find ways to eat right and excersise cheaply"

To each his own. I believe once you're educated about what you need to be doing and how to do it, you should do what works for you. I think those people who don't use their gym memberships mostly lack support and an education in what they are/should be doing and why. This board is a great place for both. He's already headed in the right direction, imo.

I've been a gym member in he past, and have to say that it does take more dedication to work out at home. There are always a million other "household" chores you might think are more important, or the phone keeps rining, or the kids keep asking for stuff. If you're going to work out at home you HAVE to be dedicated and put your workouts first.

I guess that depends on where you live. I live 30 minutes from the nearest gym. I lift at home, same as you. It's easier for me because, as we all know, getting there is half the battle. Will my gym right there I lack the excuses for not going. If I had to drive 30 minutes, it would be easier for me to come up with reasons why I should go. But, like Ashley said to each his own. If bigboy0941 is properly motivated, I don't think he needs a gym membership, that was the question and thats my answer, IMHO. I tell most people to start out with diet, push ups, sit ups and wall squats and work there way up to needing weights.

i think you can.
do cardio, running, swimming some biking, and do push ups, pull ups and abs, like a mother F#CKER!!! and grab a dumbell set or 2 and crank it out at your apartment all the time. worked for me. but i missed the gym to much so i'm back at the gym as well. but you can do it without a gym in my opion. stay motivated and dedicated.

I do everything at home now but my legs, as machines make the world of difference; but can be done at home.

I say, buy a 1/2 decent bench, one with a safety bar (duno whats it's called) so if you press and fail, and no spotter, then it stops it.
And you;'ll be set ;)
