Camera geeks, what to get?

pdaddyII

High End Bro

I'm in the market for a nice point and shoot digital camera. I've done some research but there are a shit ton of options. I'm looking for some expertise or personal feedback, thanks fgts

And don't be like any of these homos in this thread and buy a dslr and use it as a point in shoot.

Fuck people piss me off.

Fuckin retards that buy a dslr and use it in the pre programmed modes and have the on cmera flash poppin off all the time not knowing wtf they're doing.

exactly!

If you buy a dslr and don't know aperture (f-stop), Shutter speed, ISO and how they all relate, or even how to properly use it in manual mode then fuck off and use your cellphone.

If you're willing to learn tho you can take some awesome pics with a DSLR.

If you have time will you please PM me I want to learn how to use my DSLR (Nikon D3000) I took a few classes but I still cant seem to grasp the Manuel mode all my pics come out looking like shit! some do come out lookiing great thou. My main prob is that the pics I take of my kids come out blurry or not completly in focus.

Hahaha, freaking true though.

PDaddy, what exactly are the applications and expectations you have for the camera?

Do you need reach? Is picture quality a top priority?

There are some point and shoots that offer quality above that of a cell phone, but the typical P&S is a POS.

What's your budget? What about size? Is size a determining factor? Mirrorless cameras offer small size and good image quality.

When I started into photography, I was freaking clueless. I bought an P&S, albeit an expensive one, and I was continually disappointed with the results in terms of sharpness, color depth and noise. I went and bought a DSLR and never looked back. There is no comparison. Then I used an FF (dslr with 35mm sensor) with top of the line lenses and the results are nothing short of amazing. Baller!

If you have the latest smart phone, 90% of P&S are worthless. An iPhone or a Galaxy S3 or S4 will do the job just as well.

you don't have to go top of the line DSLR to take good pics.

I shot all those with a cheap ass canon t2i.

Real talk.

I like the Nikon 1 V1 as a bridge between a point-n-shoot and a DSLR. It's compact like a p'n's but it has an eye-level viewfinder, and it has interchangable lenses if you ever outgrow the lens that comes with the kit. The weak point is its sensor doesn't have the best resolution specs.

You need to increase your shutter speed to eliminate motion blur, and adjust your ISO and Fstop accordingly for a proper exposure.

Also, if they are running around, you need to be on Servo mode, which will actively update your focus point as the subject moves.

oh, i didn't see you asked a question.

Yeah, your shutter speed is too slow. What aperture are you shooting at? You can bump the aperture up (smaller number) which will allow more light to enter the sensor which will in turn increase your shutter speed and freeze the image. You can play around with the ISO but i typically like to leave it at 100 or so unless it's kinda dark out and i will start to bump it up a lil.

if you're doing candid photos of your children playing around you can shoot in shutter priority and the camera will automatically adjust everything to give you the desired shutter speed. 1/250s is fast enough to freeze the shot in action.

If you'er doing portraits you can shoot in aperture priority.

Use those 2 settings until you can grasp how Aperture, Shutter Speed and Iso work.

Once you get the hang of that you can start playing with ambient light and introduce some off camera flash switch to manual mode and take some great shots and be in full control.

I shot all those with a cheap ass canon t2i.

Real talk.

A t2i is extremely capable. That's what I have. The FF I used was borrowed.

I'm going to move to FF though when I can justify the money.

Canon are faggots though because the new t5i offers no real world benefit over a t2i. They added bells and whistles, but at the end of the day it still has the same 18mp sensor. And since I shoot in manual 99.9% of the time, all that other crap adds me no benefit. A t2i right now is a serious bargain buying one lightly used.

I have my eyes on the 6D because it offers better IQ than the 5D3, though it's neglible, but the price is far apart. What you lose out on is a world class AF system that the 5D3 has, but it's not with paying $1500 for it. I'm most concerned with sharpness, detail, dynamic range and accuracy of color. The FF does these much better than a crop.

same here bro...I want a 1Dx, but I can't justify that so I'll pry settle for a 5DM3.

I went ahead and spent my money on better lenses that I could use on a FF camera later when I felt I was "good enough" at taking pics to justify having a FF camera.

I've got a Nikon d5100.
I can't take pics anywhere close to the quality you are doing and I know its capable. What's a good way or place to learn just some simple things to use. I'd like some close up portrait style like you take, and sometimes action one of the little ones running around out back.

what are you having trouble with?

Hubby had a Nikon P80, sold it to move here and downgraded to an Olympus SP-600UZ, last year I got got him a T3i with 2 dif lenses and subscription to popular photography and outdoor photography.

I've seen the improvement in the quality of the image he takes but he should be doing better, no fucking way he could take the pics plank took on the t2i, how much image adjusting did you do on those plank? (Photoshop type) I'd love to see how much it enhances the raw image since editing is where hubby lacks

there is very little post editing done to any of those photos nan.

I shoot in auto WB so I sometimes will adjust the WB slightly or maybe touch up the exposure.

I haven't even been doing photography for a year yet.

Honestly I got tired of paying people to take pics of my son and said to myself, "it can't be taht fukin' hard)

Picked up a camera and started fuckin around.

Word. I have a 70-300L. Amazing lens. Pricey, but worth every penny.

I have the 70-200 F2.8 IS II USM which IMO is the best.

real talk.

Definitely a boss lens.

The 70-300 rivals it, minus a fixed aperture through the zoom range.

The 70-300 L is every bit as sharp, IS is just as good, color is just as good, CA is just as minimal. It does have a significant reach advantage too.

The 70-200L IS USM II is regarded as the #1 zoom lens though. 70-300 L is number 2. Both are phenomenal.

yeah, i'm a boss tho so I had to do it up big. :)

my only complaint about it is that it's really heavy (i don't work out, Obv)

Do you have one of those Khaki photographers vest with 50 pockets for film like all the Asians at Disneyland?

what are you having trouble with?

Could you give me a sample of how you set your camera up for the pix of the little boy? My camera is completely stock, but do have that 300x lense also I got as a package deal. Wasn't sure if you needed special lenses or flashes to get that look.

No, but this ones good too. I was referring to the 1st one of the baby eating and pacifier. It doesn't have to be exact as I only have stock and not the lighting you do, but what setting would you recommend to set for a good portrait style close up like that? Seems like that brighter washed out look is the popular style these days.

are you talking about the milky backgrounds?

That's called bokeh.

Your 300mm lens will be good for acheiving that look. Just set up your portrait however you wish and go back farther than you would with a prime lens and zoom in at the higher end of the lens' aperture (my lens was f2.8 and I shot at 3.5).

Focus on your subject (Try to focus on the eye itself) because you as long as the eyes are sharp even if some of the photo isn't you won't be able to tell.

If you don't have an off camera flash of some sort then you won't really be able to achieve the dramatic shadows and what not, but you can still create the photos I did of the toddler.

You will have a hard time doing that indoors like I did (in the parents living room) but go out on a nice cloudy day and let the clouds be your diffuser, or go out and the golden hours and you'll get some great shots.

exactly!

If you buy a dslr and don't know aperture (f-stop), Shutter speed, ISO and how they all relate, or even how to properly use it in manual mode then fuck off and use your cellphone.

Polaroids take the best pics. Balee dat

Then why not save money, buy a point and shoot with good manual controls? When you reach the limit with that camera THEN buy a real DSLR.

Do you change the settings at all or white balance or shutter speed or just stock?

Wb I leave in auto and just change in post editing if need be.

Shutter speed influences exposure so yes that is always changing.

With off camera flash you will typically leave at your cameras sync speed (1/250 sec)
