calling all runners....

skinny...

well right now i am only running about 30 to 35 mpw...

i am doing 4 miles 5 days a week and then a long run of about 10 to 15 on sundays...

i eat a fiber cereal (kashi) with a fruit in the
morning, a luna bar as a mid morning snack, chicken and rice for lunch or maybe sushi, luna
bar and fruit in the afternoon, and then pasta
for dinner...

any thoughts on this? and a gallon or more of water a day...

I thought you said you take flax oil?

Anyway, I think your diet is good. If you keep it the same, and increase your mileage, you will most likely lose weight. Just beware of the hunger--high mileage makes you ravenous. You wouldn't believe how much I can eat if I let myself.

skinny...

yes i am sorry... i forgot... i am currently taking in 2 tablespoons of flax a day...

should i stop taking it?

Cozmo,

I can't imagine the flax is bad for you--in fact it is probably good for your joints, and provides energy. I'm actually thinking of taking it too, in place of some of the carbs/protein that I'm eating now. What do you think? What have your results been in terms of your energy and bodyfat levels?

Try this....

website, it contains LOTS of info about running long distances like dieting, training, exercises, etc, etc. It'll answer many of your questions. I still subscribe to its monthly magazine even though I don't run like I used to:

I agree w/ skinnyfat on continuing weightraining, but making it second priority. You'll need to slowly increase your big runs. My girlfriend has done the San Diego and LA marathons and she's done training runs up to 24 miles. I wouldn't worry too much about your appetite. When you start doing these really long runs you'll need to eat everything in sight. When I do my 100+ mile training rides I can eat 6000-7000kcal a day and still stay under 10% BF. As long as you are eating clean you'll do fine.

Run run run. I think the biggest obstacle for you will be your stride (based on your size). If you were a lanky 6'er you could make the transition easier. Focus on extending your stride when running. Alot of guys have a short stride and this is slower and hard on the knees. I don't think wour weight will hurt in fact the muscle will really help (I bet you'll lose about 10lbs and get down to 145 if you keep training hard). Endurance sports require muscle power. You might not have that muscular endurance, but your strength will help and you'll develop that muscular endurance pretty quick.

The San Diego Marathon is pretty flat. It has a few rolling grades, but generally it is flat. It's kinduva boring course. It is actually in Carlsbad. It goes right along the ocean for a stretch. The year my girl ran it the weather was cold (50s) and overcast w/some rain. It was only slightly nicer this past spring. The weather in SoCal in the spring is typically cool (50s-60s) and overcast. the weather for the LA and San Diego marathons is usually the same. Where are you at cozmo?

skinnyfat-
do you ride a lot? That is what I love to do. Do you do triathlons or just ride for fun?

I started riding to cross-train and give my joints a break from running. I would only ride about 100 miles a week, less if I was racing (running) that week. I loved it. Once I graduated school, though, my job has taken so much time that I can't afford the hours it takes to keep up riding--I still try to ride on Sundays, though. Plus, I moved to SoCal, and the drivers really freak me out. No triathelons, though--I can't swim to save my life.

fhg43...

I'm in NYC... thanks for the info on the SD Marathon... I knew that it was pretty flat thus why I've selected it...

I've heard that its a pretty good first timer course...
