Building Muscle

My boyfriend is 24 and skinny. He has always been like this and I'm pretty sure he always will be because his Dad is the same. He doesn't seem to think that he will be able to bulk up but I am convinced that with the right diet, he would be able to. At the moment, he only really eats 3 meals a day and doesn't really snack in between. He eats what he wants (including junk food) and doesn't put on any weight at all. We both go to the gym but he feels it's pointless him trying to build up because he thinks he will only get toned (which he is anyway really) and not bulk up. If he has the right diet, is it possible for him to get bigger? He obviously has a very fast metabolism.

That is a difficult question to answer and I know that most poeple will probably come back with the answer of yes. He may be able to bulk up a bit but not a large amount. If his metabolic rate really is through the roof then it will be very difficult. It is worth a try but I would be prepared to understand that his body may just adjust to a specfic weight that is not to much higher than his current. I started lifting weights when i weight about 145 lb at the age of 22. I'm now 155 lb and 28 years old. I've been 155 for several years. I've always been lean and have gotten significantly bigger but always weigh in at 155. I've tried professionally designed diets from trainers and bodybuilders and have not had success with those diets. I've eaten 4000 calories a day with no gain in weight and eaten as little as 2300 calories a day consistently without losing weight or strength.

I would try a diet focussing on the 2 hours prior to lifting and the 2 hours post work out, making certain to get a lot of carbs post work out. But be prepared for genetics to dominate and keep him lean

Quality tips from, steig!

I'm a firm believer that if one wants to bulk up they can. I used to be one of the kids in high school that just "toned" up because I didn't know how to eat right. If he is really going to be dedicated he will, he needs to believe in himself first and foremost to proceed. Here's a quote that I read that really set things in motion a while back:

"I've never seen anyone grow eating a grilled chicken salad!"

One may take that in many different ways... I took it as, I can only have a salad as one of my "mini meals" while bulking. Another mental thought I had to surpass personally was the williness to put on a little fat (because i wasn't going to use AAS to bulk up yet). Nontheless I put on about 15 lbs of quality lbm since september on my upper body... deff didn't train legs enough (note to self)... that's all I can get into right now, I have some tasks that need attending too.

Good luck with helping your boyfriend on the quest to bigness!

OH...

And have him stick to COMPOUND lifting movements... and limited cardio.

NO more bicep curls. I call these "accessory" muscles when trying to bulk, they will get bigger as his compound movements progress in weight.

100% effort in the gym and 200% effort out of the gym will have him making gains in no time. Oh, and limit booze as well (raises estrogen levels the morninng after, estrogen = will no build muscle).

If I think of something else I'm sure I'll post again :)
