I do 1 heavy set sidebends for direct oblique work because I have noticed I feel alot more stable in squats from doing so. 1 good set of weight situps and a set of leg raises and I'm good. I do 1 set of 1 of those exercises per week so 1 set per week in addition to all the isometric work they get from squats, deads, standing press, bb rows etc.
Most people overtrain the crap out of their abs. For strong abs you almost need zero direct work so long as you focus on training the whole body with compound lifts.
