NEAR INFRARED TECHNOLOGY (FUTREX)
The technique is an improved method by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to measure the fat content of meat.

It is based on the fact that the light on a wavelength of approximately 928mm (near infra-red) is absorbed differently in the different organic materials constituting a tissue. In other words, when such a light is shined on a tissue, fat absorbs the light and "lean body mass" reflects the lights back. The reflected light is measured by the special sensor, (Optical Detector). This is transmitted into the computer, which has already been given the andropemetric measurements, (weight, height, body frame, etc.) and is translated into percentage of body fat.

As the measurement of fat is performed directly, changes in the other elements of the body, (e.g. water), has no bearing on the accuracy of the measurement. This means that the measurement can be performed anytime and in any condition of the body, meaning that the hydration status of the body has no bearing on the results.

Futrex recommends measuring of the body fat on a single site, ( the centre of the biceps of the dominant arm). Therefore, there is no need for disrobing. Independent studies show that the single site measurement provides an accuracy of 2.8 %, which is well within the range of accuracy of under water weighing.

This remarkable accuracy and the ease of use, has made the NIR technology the most desirable method. I have personally been using this method with my own clients for the past year with continuously accurate results every single time.

how does it calculate full body fat if it's only measuring at one site? It doesnt take into account that people store fat differently.

hmmm.

ya know how people have "trouble" spots?

wouldn't a one site test decrease the accuracy?

I mean say they did to my tricep and then my lower ab. wouldn't the reading be way diff?

Sounds pretty interesting. Is this something that requires training on how to use, or is it something that can be, for example, bought for home use?

is this similar to the BF testing devices that are now available on home scales?

No.

Those are based on impedence.

Near infrared is a completely different approach.
