Best Whey Protein - My reasons...

Well, Optimum Nutrition's 5lb. canisters of whey protein, usually vanilla ice cream (80 servings, more is better, and it dissolves easily and tastes great) is, in my opinion, the best protein drink out there.

I remember Debaser saying he likes Pro Complex 55, due to the higher amount of protein per serving, and glutamine in each. I did some math, and found out you're much better off getting ~> http://www9.netrition.com/optimum_whey_page.html <~

THAT STUFF

WP = Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein
PC = Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex

Cost
WP - 28.95
PC - 43.95

Just assuming you followed the exact diet posted on the first page of the DC Training thread, you'd be consuming 5 shakes a day of PC. Now, with 55 grams of protein a serving for PC, you'd need exactly 2.5 of WP - which means you'd have to consume 12.5 servings of WP.

Now, look at the servings in PC. 28. Divide 28 by 5. You've got yourself 5.6. Assuming you were devouring the protein at such a rate as on DC's suggested diet plan, you would need to refill your protein stock every 5 and a half days, roughly.

However, vanilla ice cream has 80 servings. Divide 12.5 into that and you've got 6.4.

This means, roughly every 6 and a half days you replace your supply of WP. So you get an extra day before you have to buy once more, and spend $15 less!

As for Glutamine, don't worry. Each serving of WP, the Vanilla Ice Cream flavor, has 2443 mgs of Glutamine. PC has 5131 mgs per serving. But look, 2.5 servings of WP (which you need to equal the same protein content of PC) would be 2443 (mgs Glut) multiplied by 2.5 so...

6107.5 mgs glutamine every shake of WP equal to PC in protein content.

And then calories? No problem.

260 for every PC
110 for every WP

110 x 2.5 = 275

So, besides cost, WP (assuming equal protein content) wins in...
Calories
Glutamine (mgs)
Potassium

I just bothered to check the last one out of curiosity. The rest of the nutrients aren't so important. I figured I'd point out the big ones to people.

I was bored and stayed up all night, and this crossed my mind. I've noticed it for a long time, but wanted to do some math and actually compare the two. Maybe there's a better source of protein out there, but as of now this one tastes great, is cheap, is delivered to me in a day (considering Netrition.com's warehouse is in NY, and I live on LI), and is the best possible buy out there I've found yet!

my fav is now allthewhey unflavored isolate. cheap at 30bucks and good quality. add a lil fat free pudding mix and it's the best.

i have 10 lbs of it in my cabinet right now.....

vanilla ice cream and chocolate mint....

they are yummy....even taste good in water just water and ice.
by far the best I've had so far.

Legion, take out your calculator again. Was the $29 for 5 pounds?

This place has Opt Nutr Whey Pro for $45 for 10 pounds. so 2 of your 5 pound buckets would be $58.

http://claytonnutrition.com/Qstore/p000146.htm

Ps shipping sucks but It may depend on where you live and there are other places that might be less shipping I`ve found 10 pounds for $50... still better than $58.

Gonelifting, thanks for the site, I'll check it out.

I've found sites that sell it for cheaper before, but shipping was off the wall, and isn't delivered in one day like it is from Netrition. If I'm in no rush and can save some money, sure, I'll do it.

i agree with you for the most part. sometimes whey is useful for extra protein when I'm too full to eat anything solid.

Yep.

Optimum Nutrition whey- vanilla. Mixes well with fruit and oj or good in milk or water.

10 lbs = approx. $50 is a good value imo

Yes, but I don't want a whey isolate :)

I like a mixture of proteins, the procomplex has a very good blend. It also has a lot of extra goodies in it.

I like either:

Optiumum 100% Natural Whey Protein (QuadPlex Protein Blend Ultrafiltered Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate From Ion Exchange and Cross Flow Microfiltration). I like this because it tastes yummy.

OR

Protein Factory Post Training Blend (50% Maltodextrin, 25% CFM Whey Isolate, 25% Hydrolyzed 520). This is the ONLY postworkout shake where I literally FELT a difference. I like this one because it works well.

Allthewhey unflavored is GREAT for adding to foods, because it absorbs the flavor of whatever you're cooking it in.

Steak BEST. :D

thats what a blend is for...
oh, i wasnt aware there was a difference. i thought all protein powders were created equal, other than the obvious differences in macro's and different types of proteins.

oh, i wasnt aware there was a difference

Whey absorbs damn fast, and casein is much slower. This is just the way the protein is wound, its primary, secondary, and tertiary structure for you chem and bio majors. Basically whey unwinds in the stomach and casein doesn't. So you get this little lump of casein that goes away relatively slowly.

Also, don't explicitly buy glutamine. Most if not all wheys have it in significant quantities, and orally ingested glutamine doesn't even go to your muscles anyway. Instead it makes your intestines happy.

Spatts,
I use to buy proteinfactory's stuff also. They were tested indy, and failed miserably. I don't remember the exact test results, but they were something like 80% of their claim(if that). Optimum tested with only a few percent off(better than average). After I saw the results, I stuck with Optimum.

Interesting. When I tested PF it came out great, but I only tested THAT blend. Do you know what was tested and where I can see the results?

The only test I saw that showed PF "failing" was dubious in my oppinion. I SEARCHED through the previous posts of the poster that put up the study... and he sure as hell looked like a shill for Optimum Whey.

I've never seen another test on PF.

It was their whey that was tested. It was probably late last year, so word probably got back to them and they've cleaned up since then, but after that I was just turned off. It was brought up on the supplement board quite a while ago. Someone presented the lab result sheet. After I saw it, I found the results another place on-line, but I'm not sure where. It was legit, but I can't remember who had the results or where they took them. Big help huh? Sowy:(

When was your test done and what was tested?

Which whey did they test? I tested the one that I put in that post. The post training blend: CFM isolate and hydro 520. This was last May or June...about this time last year.

Sofa, not doubting you bro...but I remember the guy being someone I recognized from the board. I'm always skeptical about shit like that and I would have dismissed the claim if I didn't think it was adequately supported. I remember being totally convinced. I wish I could remember more about it.

I'll have to look into this again. I don't know if I'll be able to find anything thanks to the non-plat search restrictions, but I'll try.

that would explain why my 520 whey mix tasted just like my 80% micellar casein mix...
hmm interesting

Those results kind of make me wonder if the hydro that was tested already had the malto mixed in. That's about the carb number I'd expect to see, and when we tested hydro the carbs content was <1. Damn I wish I still had that info. That was, like, 3 hard drives ago.

thanks St8k! had to nab one for $37 delivered

That is the cheapest price I have seen anywhere. I go into this guys store to check out his prices and he hands me his card and says to check out the online store, he says its a bit cheaper than his shelf prices. I was not expecting that big a difference in price but it was substancial to say the least..

I think I use Ironman Whey. Not sure of the name. Just ran out and it's sitting out in the recycle container and I'm too lazy to walk out there and look.

I've strayed from Optimum a few times.. right now I'm on Designer Whey and I wish it would run out faster so I can get back to the O

whey

anybody ever try vitamin world brand? i have been using for 6months. vitamin worlds products have tested above name brands. i believe i read that on comsumer lab reports.

I have bought sups at vitamin world, b/c they price match to ANY internet site. The only product by them that I've tried was "Protoplex" their answer to Myoplex b/c they give away a free sample with purchase. Same nutrition info as Myoplex, but it tastes like crap. :(

Oops, my bad. I use Precision Whey, it's 25g of protein per 35g serving (which is 1 scoop). The names all sound the same anyway.

i like vp-2 from ast

its pretty cheap at dps nutrition. based on what i have seen at this board, optimum may be the best choice all around for quality and price.
