Benefits of deadlift

I have been doing deadlift since past 1 year and now I can easily lift 200 pounds. I wanted to know, apart from strengthening back, what benefits it brings to other parts of the body?

It adds mass and strength to the entire body. It's very effective for building explosive power also which is great for athletes in any sport. So keep doing them and improve your technique.

I herniated my lumbar disc doing deadlifts.

I had perfect form for 5 years straight, and one day I was tired and messed up my form, and BAM! herniation!

This, IMO is a hugely dangerous lift and had I known back then I would have never done it. I rather have a weak back than risk becoming a paraplegic.

^^Totally agree deadlifts are amazing but very risky it was one of the first lifts i started with and about a year ago i fucked my shit up and to this day when its cold my lower back is sore. Just practice good form before you go heavy.

Deads with proper form is a great back, leg, and total mass movement. Keep doing them, and if you have pain, research proper form...

Best advice I ever got was from a mark rippetoe video.... don't think of deads as a pull movement, think of it as a push. Push with your legs, then push with your hips. Changes your total mindset.

^^^^^This is exactly right. Most people pull when they should push instead. Every time I see an inexperienced lifter doing dl they are always trying to pull the bar. And every time they fall way short of their true potential because their back tires out before lockout. If they would just drive the hips forward they could finish the lift. They also tend to round the low back and almost never have a straight bar path. My advice is if your having any pain issues from doing dl, have an experienced dl look at your form and correct it. Chances are 99% of the time it's a technique issue, and the other 1% is a muscle imbalance or weakness.

Many thanks for all your tips! and I now know that correct form is important because my last set is done with the maximum weight that I can endure and during that time, my back some times does not form that perfect hunch. I will be conscious next time I do it.
