Benching Speed Question

First, this is not a DE speed bench question. Right now im not even doing WS training. I am doing a basic "periodization" type of training...

Ok, here is my question.... WHile at the gym today doing bench, I was working out with this older guy. He started giving me some advise for benching. Normally I take the advise from others very lightly since they all think they "know everything" :D
ANyway, Im no way perfect myself and dont claim to be, but back to the question...

He gave me 3 suggestions:

1) grip the bar as tight as possible! When he told me this, I was like wow.... This guy knows his shit!!! I mean I knew this already but was not actually doing it!!!!! So his advise was much needed!!! one point for the old man :D

2) keep my ass on the bench and stop moving around....Ok again i knew I was supposed to, but did not realize that I was moving around like that. Again, I was impressed by his advise, and worked on my form for the next few sets, really appreciating his advise!! Ok, two points for the old man :D

3) ok, this is where I felt that maybe the old man had enough points already and this part of his advise was more for "body-building" and not strength ..... He told me to slow the weight down some and concentrate on working the muscle, try to feel it in the chest .... now I know thats good sometimes and can help you build strength, but my goal is to get the weigh up as FAST as possible, right?? Now my form was good, except for my butt comming off the bench the last 1-2 reps, which I am working on ..... However, I wasnt putting the weight up like a DE speed bench...I was doing 225 for reps so it could not have been THAT FAST!!!

So, when doing regular bench, should I press the weight up as fast as possible, under control and barely touch my chest, or do the whole set slower?

oh, and for the old man, does he get 2 points or 3 points here
:D

Building Strength...

"I feel the need, the need for speed." Whether you are using a pause or a "touch and go" always lift the weight as fast as possible. This goes for ALL exercises.

- Always use good form

- On the concentric (muscle stretch - negative) portion of the lift use a slower, controlled pace

- On the eccentric (muscle contraction) portion of the lift use a quick, explosive pace - as hard and as fast as you can using good form

Thazzit!

hey Screwball, thats EXACTLY what I thought and have been doing for basically all of my lifts ...

However, for the lowering (negative) portion of the bench, how slow would you recommend bringing the weight down? (2 sec's?) I usually bring down pretty fast but NEVER BOUNCE or hit my chest hard at all! I barely touch and go...

Thanks

vtec96 you dont have to bring it down real slow just slow enough to keep it controlled and keep your body tight. dont let the weight drop. even if you bounce you can still bring it down slow. but make sure when you bring it down slow as soon as it hits your chest you better push it up with all you got.

go ahead and give him 3 ponits for trying! :teleport:

The first two points were good but you gotta get that blinding speed going on DE day!!
You need speed, greasy fast speed, you need the speed, your speed and even if you have a 78inch reach like me it should take less than 3 sec for 3 reps. Btw i used 225 for DE bp yesterday and you just need to get pissed and toss that weight around ferociously and punish it!! Dont listen to that old timer much!! Toughen up and toss that little weight around!!!

oh, and for the old man, does he get 2 points or 3 points here

I agree with Freak. The most important thing about lowering a weight is to stay in control of the weight. Stay tight, use good form and never let the weight control the movement. Usually the heavier the weight becomes the slower the descent.

Exactly right. I lower at a medium pace if i had to pick. I doest fall , but its far from slow. Its controled. But the push back up is as fast as i possibly can. And i mean so fast that i have felt like i have hyper extended my elbow before.

Me and freak 19 are both in Lakeland Florida. You?

Thanks PLJ, actually im in Homestead (20 mins south of Miami!!) soo far from everything!! Hey Im doing your routine-advise and its really going Good!!! You think I should also do any Back Work on my Bench days? Maybe 1-2 sets? I asked this in another post....and they seem to agree 1-2 sets is good....

Later,

I would say it doesnt matter exactly if its that day but i would hit lats twice a week every week. I do mine on back day and leg day. Its always kinda light too. I used to do rows and they work but i like chest supported better. Try one arm dumbells too. Takes some off your back.
