back pain

I have started a new workout schedule focusing on building strength recently. I have been learning to do bench press, free weight squats, and dead lifts.

I went in Sunday to do a lower body workout that I pulled from a sample of westside workouts. I did good mornings (first time ever), dead lifts, pull throughs, and calves (I think that is all).

I felt fine after the workout, no discomfort or pain. Monday I woke up with a sore back and by the time I went to bed, I couldn't stand up straight. I feel better today, though if I arch my back at all it hurts really bad. I have felt my back and i can't locate any muscles that feel sore.

Is my back sore from the workout or could I have hurt my back? I had to miss upper body this morning and I am not sure I should go tomorrow...this is really messing up my new workout...

And if the good mornings and such hurt my back, what other exercises can i do for lower body (besides squats, of course)?

Thanks.

you are probably fine...if you felt good after the workout-most likely you did no damage......you however over taxed those muscles.....when introducing new excersises try to refrain from quanity and just concentrate on forms....especially with excersises for the lower back...all of the work you did incorporated those muscle groups and became over-worked very quickly....drink lots of water and stretch-your ok......

i remember the first time i did heavy good morning. i thought i tore both hamstrings off, and broke my back. good memories.

Be sure and lift with proper position. Also, when you work you hamstrings....if they are tight, you're gaurenteed to have a sore back. Stretch those buddies out.

Lots of active recovery. As long as the soreness is on BOTH sides I wouldn't be too concerned. Ice is your friend.

Form is everything on these. Any chance you could post, or PM, a vid?

Your lower back muscles get sore just like any other, we are just more used to associating them with a negative type of strain.

Spatts...when is heat more appropriate than ice??? heat feels better, especially on back muscles.......thx

ice when the injury is acute. You don't want to heat in the acute stage of pain and injury.

2 herniated disc here. yes heat feels better, but ice after. alternated heat and ice. i love hot tubs and saunas. stretch couple times a day. major factor in my rehab was yoga.

Buffy...makes sense, thanks.....seeclear- been on that road and alternating hot/cold is great....thx
