Back Machines

If and when any of you use back machines do you use a wide grip or a closer grip? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of each?
When i use them i usually switch hand positions between each set.

It depends on what machine your talking about. I usually try to use free weights as much as possible, but when I do use machines, I try to keep my grip as far out as possible. Although it does depend on the exercise and machine your talking about, basically the further your grip is the more of your outer back your working and vice versa. If you are only using machines, then it is a good idea to switch back and forth to ensure that yuor not cheating any part of your back.

For pull-down use a wide grip, not all the way to the end of the bar but where the curve starts. For cable rows i use a closer grip.

It depends on what you're lacking. Me, width, so I focus on wider grips. There are BBs whom have flaring lats, w/ nothing in the middle. They need to use more close grip exercises.

For pulldowns, I prefer the close-grip with the V bar. It does so much more for my back than wide-grips. You got to bring the V bar all the way down so it touches you chest every time though. None of this 3/4 rep shit just to pull extra weight.
