here's the arny pic from that time peroid, he probably mixed up his techniques or something. i seem to remember him going deep myself..

Remember, Pumping Iron was shot around contest time. The only two guys I've ever seen going balls out that close was Nasser (working his back like an animal 4 days out.....too bad it didn't help) and Dorian (4 plates a side on a Hammer incline press 7 days out.....what a stud).
 
Going below parallel actually takes some of the emphasis off of the quads and places it squarely on the glutes. If you want to activate your glutes while squatting then definately hit parallel or lower. If you don't want an ass like J-Lo then maybe you should stop before then. Personally I like to go right at parallel as stopping before then is harder on my legs than if I go parallel or lower.
