Got any suggestions where would be reasonable and close by for accomodations?

They should post the contest hotel very soon. I'll see what I can come up with.

VDOP, I generally use Priceline.com, bid 4 star or better, and bid the Lambert Airport area, as well as Westport. Last time, I ended up at a Marriot Hotel 2 miles from the gym, in a VERY nice room for about 35 a night. The airport is 3 miles from the gym, if that helps.

I had an awesome time, and a great learning experience. Let me start by saying that I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever again in my WHOLE, ENTIRE life, EVER, try to "make-weight."

After dropping 8 pounds in about 16 hours, I was completely dehydrated, and my lower back was starting to hurt where the kidneys are. I'm no stranger to kidney trouble (cystic bladder) so I knew what was hurting right away. We left for St. Louis, which is only a 3 hour drive. Half way there, I started peeing blood (sorry to be graphic, but there aren't a whole lot of tactful ways to articulate the problem). By the time I got to St. Louis and checked into the hotel, I was hurting pretty bad. Started to go to bed, then decided, "Screw making weight....I need to eat." Well, half way to the restaurant, I decided I REALLY needed to make a detour to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where I spent most of the night in ER waiting for urinary analgesics and an anti-biotic that wouldn't tear me up too much for competing. The nurse had never seen a ketone count that high...asked me if I was on a high protein diet. I told her I had been fasting to make weight for a comp. The doc saw me right away, even though the average wait time in ER that night was about 8 hours. He was a body builder type, and sympathetic to my concerns. We hunted down a 24 hour pharmacy to fill the scrips, and headed back to the hotel. At this point it was about 4:30 AM, and I had lost all interest in eating. So I went to bed, woke up, and weighed in 2 POUNDS OVER !!!!!! They asked me if I wanted to take more time to lose the other two. I laughed and told them I simply wanted pancakes. :D

So I spent all day Friday carbing up, and no matter what I did (including R-ala), no matter how much I ate, I was dehydrated and weak. My back (over my kidneys) was killing me, and I was still peeing...well, you know.

Saturday morning was a little better...still very dehydrated. I ate and headed for the comp. After almost 30 hours of non-stop stuffing my face, I was still dehydrated and had only gained back 2 pounds.

First move: Squat. First attempt, 350...no problem. Flew up. 2nd attempt, 405 pounds (should've been no big deal) I get to the bottom, start to push up, and feel like I'm about to give birth to one of my kidneys. The spotters took the bar.

At this point, I headed for my handy-dandy little bottle of "kidney-pain killers." I took those, and by the time the bench press rolled around, I was feeling damn good. First attempt 250 lbs...3 white lights. Second attempt...260 lbs, failed because my arse came off the bench. The press was easy though, so I went ahead and increased for my 3rd attempt. Third attempt 270 lbs...3 white lights.

Hell yeah, time to pull!! They save the best for last.

Deadlift...I felt great. Still dehydrated, but my spirits were slightly recovered from the bench performance. First attempt 375 lbs...3 white lights. Second attempt 410 lbs (a PR)...3 white lights. Third attempt 430 lbs...3 white lights.

The reason I picked these numbers to go for (430/270/430) was because they are what I would need to reach Elite in the 198 class. Now that I know I'm capable of the bench and deadlift needs, I just need to get over this kidney issue, and come back for the 430 squat.

I ended up with 1st place again...because I was, once again, the only female lifter in the 198 class.

What I re-learned about myself: I trust my body as is. When I started to make weight, I had to take a bunch of herbal diuretics to lose water. Then as I started to drop weight, I had to take tylenol to get rid of the hunger headache. I took magnesium citrate, which had to be counteracted by the Immodium AD. Then I had to take an anti-biotic and a pain killer to deal with the results of dehydrating, which meant I needed to drink Pedialyte to regain some balance....on and on. The more I put in my body, the more confidence I lost. I trust my body to what I need it to do, when I need it to be done. It ALWAYS comes through. I didn't feel right mentally in the state I was in. I really needed to go through this though, and I'm grateful I learned the lesson at a local comp, and not a larger, more competitive comp. When I was done deadlifting, all I could think to do was thank God for a capable body that puts up with SO much. With all I do to it, all the potential injury, all the things that could happen, I'm grateful for the fleet of guardian angels that allow me to do what I love to do.

I want to thank B fold (and his lil lady) for making it to the comp. I couldn't find you after the comp, B, and I wanted you to have dinner with us. Hope you made it home ok, and it meant SO much to me having you there.

Hannibal was our "handler," and I think he did more work than ALL of us! Thanks, D!

Animalmass, genemachine, DG21, Kyle, Matt...great work, guys. Always an honor.

I met a lot of really great people, and once again, Dionne and Willie Wessels (and crew) run a helluva meet. Those of us who are APF members, and live in Missouri set the Missouri state records, by default.

So...

Squat: 350 lbs (Egads...how embarassing. Hurts just to type it)
Bench: 270 lbs
Deadlift: 430 lbs
Total: 1050 @ 185 lbs body weight

a job well done, despite a gangload of adversity!

nonerz was chomping at the bit all weekend to know "spatts' results" so i'll email these to her for tomorrow's morning email.
