Anyone teach themselves how to play an instrument?

I can play the drums, but never took any lessons. I can just play them. Not incredibly well though, but I could probably carry myself through some songs.

I've been wanting to teach myself how to play guitar lately. Anyone ever done this? It tough?

I can play piano, drums, bass, trumpet but guitar is the only instrument I've had a teacher to teach me in the beginning. Guitar is my main instrument.

Guitar is much more difficult to learn than drums. Drums are probably the easiest, well right after the triangle. :D

Try it.

One the best jazz drummers, and drummers in general, Dennis Chambers never studied music so sure you learn play guitar without any help from others.

i taught myself guitar and blues harp. i've been playing guitar for 5 years or so. it took me about a year to be somewhat competent with the instrument, but i'm always learning. only after 4 years would i consider myself a good guitarist. but i want to be an incredible guitarist, so i keep learning and improving.

btw the harp took me only a few months to play decently. it's much easier to learn an instrument when you can already play one.

btw perkele, playing boring drums may be easy, but to be a good drummer is much harder. it's just a shame that few successful bands today have drummers that are anything special.

True that.

I could be one of those boring dudes though. That's about the extent of my abilities. lol

Guitar.
Once you learn the barre chord you can play about a million songs.

I can also play drums ok, and could probably get half decent if i tried.

Let's start a band bor. We'll call it "The Colon Cowboy Five." Clearly, we need 3 more people.

taught myself guitar and bass took about 1.5 years to get solid, true on the barre chords...., Get a chord progression guide, that shows the minor and major chords in each key...they show the fingering as well....after that you're home-free as far as teaching yourself...just check the internet for song tablature....do it every day..you'll be surprised how quick you can play

taught meself guitar, bass, keyboard(piano), drums, and most importantly... how to run a million channel mixing board :D

Metal!

I'll learn more drumming as we progress.

Few good albums to listen: Steely Dan "AJA" (drummers: Steve Gadd, Bernard "pretty" Perdie, Rick Marotta, Jim Keltner, Paul Humprey and Ed Greene) and Boz Scaggs "Silk Degrees" (drummer: Jeff Porcaro).

It's not metal but to be a good drummer you better start with those.
